On August 19, iconic label 4AD releases Chemical Chords, Stereolab's first real full-length effort since 2005's Margerine Collapse. According to band leader Tim Gaines, the effort is "a collection of "purposefully short, dense, fast pop songs," which is music to... ...

Stereolab's "Valley Hi!" seems to be composed "vertically," rather than using a traditional verse-chorus structure. By stacking countless melodic and rhythmic motifs to create a wash of subtle textures, the song flutters with overlapping synths, keyboards, and guitars, as well as Laetitia Sadler's dark, wispy alto singing in French. ...

If you get Bradford Cox talking about music long enough, the conversation almost inevitably will turn to Stereolab . The Deerhunter frontman and maker of all that Atlas Sound is a longtime fan, and a passionate one at that. Which makes him a fine fine choice to warm up a handful of dates on Stereolab's forthcoming North American tour . Atlas Sound will handle the opening slot on the first leg of the jaunt, which kicks off September 20 in Costa Mesa, California. Stereolab, of course, are gearing up for the release of their new one, Chemical Chords , due August 18 worldwide and August 19 in the U.S. via Duophonic UHF Disks/ 4AD . Atlas Sound's debut LP will make its way to vinyl via Kranky July 28. And Deerhunter's Microcastle is due October 28 via Kranky in North America and 4AD elsewhere. Tour dates for all parties are available down below. read more ...

Stereolab have made no fewer than 11 albums, many more than indie titans like Blur, Oasis, The Smiths and New Order, and far outstripping the output of technopop peers such as Depeche Mode, The Human League and even Kraftwerk – yet their appeal remains as inscrutable here as on their earliest releases. ...

It's jarring to stumble upon "Pop Molecule (Molecular Pop 1)" in the midst of Stereolab's 11th album; for a band otherwise so devoted these days to kicking out the candy-coated jams—trying to prove that all sorts of retro, exotic adult pop fits in just fine with modern indie rock—it's... ...

Is there still a market for the sour power ballad? I have to admit that I'm not really much of a fan of what Staind does. Personally, I think the sort of grungey "angst rock" these guys specialize in has never really been improved upon since Layne Staley perfected it with Alice In Chains more than ten years ago now.The thing is though, millions of fans disagree with my viewpoint on... ...

Remixes can be a dime a dozen (or a penny a laptop), but after listening to YACHT's tweaks of Stereolab and Ratatat tunes for a couple days, we figured they were more than worth posting. Jona Bechtolt's revamping of Ratatat's LP3 track "Mirando" transforms the song into a new entity, layering different noodles, bleeps, and percussion while stripping away a chunk of the instrumentation and replacing what's vacated with deep-voiced hip-hop reps about a sibling's artillery. (Goes well with Ratatat's explosive video for the original.) As far as Stereolab, Bechtolt ups "Self Portrait With 'Electric Brain'"'s dance-floor factor without losing the space-age bachelor cool. ...

Image from MySpace Stereolab/Jaguar Love Listening Party at The Beauty Bar Friday, August 15 Beauty Bar ( 7th St. at Red River ) No Cover, 21+ [ info ] More than fifteen years into their career, Stereolab have released their first true pop album, Chemical Chords , which all but throws out the art house once and for all and high-tails it for the house party. The London band are textbook example of '90s critical darlings who have evaded huge mainstream success but still managed to spawn millions of (similarly Moog-endowed) pretenders, most of whom lack the whimsy and experimental chops that have marked the band as happily unconventional since their first appearance in 1991 with the Super 45 EP. Since then, the band pushed from a gritty, lo-fi approach into the realm of sticky-sweet pop, Olivier Mourgue chaise-lounge jazz, and John Cage futurism. The end result was eight previous albums of art-rock craft that were sometimes befuddling, truly unique, and excellent more often than not. Working once again with arranger and High Llamas frontman Sean O’Hagan, Stereolab’s new record is about softening edges, O’Hagan’s swooping orchestration, and keeping their eyes on the prize. The longest song on the album is the title track, which barely reaches into five minutes. Compare this to the seventeen and a half minutes of “Refractions in the Plastic Pulse” on 1997’s Dots and Loops or the eight-minute opener “Metronomic Underground” on Emperor ...
