After decades on the fringe, geoengineering proposals have almost become mainstream in the last couple of years. Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A now has a special issue on the topic (free access as of 5 Sept.). There are plenty of ideas these days for purposefully messing with large-scale Earth systems in the hope of offsetting global warming. The Phil Trans A articles don't catalogue them, though Stephen Schneider of Stanford touches on many in a great review article . A pair of papers by the University of Edinburgh's Stephen Salter, NCAR's John Latham, and their colleagues discuss spraying micron-wide particles of sea water into the air to make clouds whiter so that they reflect more light. Ocean fertilization is defended against 20 years of outcry by Victor Smetacek of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research and Wajih Naqvi of the Indian National Institute of Oceanography. And one from Philip Rasch of NCAR and co-authors deals with sulphate aerosols. But the journal also gives space to plans for power-plant carbon capture - which in fairness was only recently promoted (or de-promoted) out of the geoengineering category - and one of the lesser-known alternative fuels . And the overall focus is the same philosophical question discussed at a recent EGU meeting : how seriously should we pursue geoengineering, given the dangers of huge side effects? ...

As Stephen likes to say, he's been a fan of the Apples In Stereo since way back when they were the Apples In Mono. Or at least, since way back to when Robert Schneider penned and performed the very special song "Stephen, Stephen" for the Colbert/Decemberists Guitarmageddon extravaganza . Yesterday the Apples returned to Stephen's little studio, ostensibly to celebrate "the release of the Japanese picture disc of 'Stephen, Stephen,'" but really to promote an album that came out so long ago who's with me. ...

A federal judge refuses to disqualify a prosecutor accused by defense attorneys of prosecutorial misconduct in the case against a Kansas doctor and his wife linked to 58 accidental overdose deaths. U.S. District Judge Monti Belot told prosecutors and defense attorneys in court Friday that other procedures are in place for such complaints. The defense for Dr. Stephen Schneider and his wife, nurse Linda Schneider, had asked Belot to disqualify Assistant U.S. Attorney Tanya Treadway for allegedly improper contact with expert defense witnesses. Prosecutors previously had made three attempts to disqualify defense counsel. Belot said he doesn't think it's appropriate for him to make decisions about lawyers' conduct. The judge said he will consider whether to issue a protective order barring attorneys from contacting expert witnesses without opposing counsel present. ...

A federal judge is holding an emergency hearing in the case of a doctor accused of running a pill mill at his Haysville clinic. The hearing will deal with defense claims that prosecutors are withholding information they need to defend Dr. Stephen Schneider and his wife, nurse Linda Schneider. U.S. District Judge Monti Belot set a hearing for 9 a.m. on July 17. The defense says the case revolves on medical disputes over the doctor's treatment decisions. They contend the government is not providing details about the opinions of experts prosecutors plan to call on to testify. The Schneiders' clinic has been linked to 56 overdose deaths. ...

Lawyers for a Kansas doctor linked to 58 accidental overdose deaths want a judge to disqualify a federal prosecutor and an agent from the case. The defense for Dr. Stephen Schneider argues the prosecutor and an investigator violated professional ethics by improperly contacting defense expert witnesses and lying to the court. The defense motion filed Monday in federal court in Wichita also asks the court for an evidentiary hearing or sworn depositions to investigate the alleged incidents. The U.S. attorney's office declined to comment, saying it will file its response to the court. Schneider and his wife, nurse Linda Schneider, are charged in a 34-count indictment with directly causing four deaths and contributing to 21 others of patients at the Haysville clinic. ...

A magistrate judge is considering conflicting testimony from inmates on whether a Haysville nurse who is accused of running a "pill mill" with her husband is a flight risk. U.S. Magistrate Judge Donald Bostwick says he will issue a written order later in the case of Linda Schneider, wife of Dr. Stephen Schneider. The doctor was released in April pending his trial but prosecutors want his wife to stay in jail because they believe she is a flight risk. Inmate Stacey Hill testified Thursday that Linda Schneider asked her about getting false identification documents if she was released. But two other inmates said Hill was vindictive and had a grudge against Schneider. ...

U.S. District Judge Monti Belot on Tuesday denied defense motions to dismiss an indictment against a Haysville physician accused of illegally prescribing painkillers whom it linked to 56 overdose deaths. Belot ruled against nearly every pretrial motion made by defense attorneys for Stephen Schneider and his wife, Linda. Belot did not buy the defense's contentions that federal drug law is unconstitutional because it infringes on the Schneiders' First Amendment rights as medical practitioners, and on the rights of their patients. He also said the statute is not unconstitutionally vague. Associated Press Six more days to register to vote ...

A federal judge has denied bond for Linda Schneider, who managed a Haysville clinic alleged to be a "pill mill." In a written ruling today, U.S. Magistrate Judge Donald Bostwick found that Linda Schneider is a flight risk. Bostwick cited recorded phone calls from jail in which Schneider spoke several times about her desire to go to Mexico. Linda Schneider is charged with her husband, physician Stephen Schneider, in a federal indictment linking their Haysville clinic to the accidental overdose deaths of 56 patients. The doctor was released in April pending his trial, but his wife has been held since her arrest in December. Bostwick said he did not base his decision on any testimony from an evidentiary hearing earlier this month. He said he did not find credible the testimony from a jailhouse informant. ...

Stephen Schneider and his wife will be back in court Wednesday to answer a new indictment linking their clinic with the accidental drug overdose deaths of 58 patients. The superseding indictment filed against Stephen Schneider and his wife, nurse Linda Schneider, adds two more accidental deaths tied to the Schneider Medical Clinic in Haysville. Prosecutors also now allege the couple contributed to the deaths of at least 21 patients and directly caused four others. The new indictment still includes 34 counts, plus seeks forfeiture of assets. However, the government is no longer charging some of those counts under federal statutes dealing with money laundering. ...

A federal judge on Friday refused to grant bond to Haysville nurse Linda Schneider, accused with her husband of running a "pill mill" linked to 58 accidental overdose deaths. U.S. District Judge Monti Belot upheld a lower magistrate judge's decision that no conditions of release would ensure that Linda Schneider would appear in court for her February trial. Belot said the government has proved that pretrial detention is warranted. Linda Schneider has remained jailed since her arrest last December, and a federal magistrate deemed her a flight risk in a July ruling. Her husband, Stephen Schneider, was released from custody in April. Belot said Linda Schneider's claim that she won't flee must be considered in light of a previous felony conviction involving Social Security fraud. He also said her right to a speedy trial was not being violated because the case has been designated complex. The Schneiders are charged in a 34-count indictment with directly causing four deaths and contributing to 21 deaths. ...

A federal judge on Wednesday refused to free Haysville nurse Linda Schneider, who is accused with her husband of running a clinic linked to dozens of overdose deaths, saying she remains a flight risk. U.S. Magistrate Judge Donald Bostwick ordered Linda Schneider held until her Feb. 2 trial on charges of conspiracy, unlawful distribution of a controlled substance resulting in death, health care fraud, illegal money transactions and money laundering. An indictment against her and her husband, Stephen Schneider, links the couple's Haysville clinic to the accidental overdose deaths of 56 patients. It also accuses the couple of directly causing four deaths and contributing to the deaths of 11 other patients. Both have pleaded not guilty. Stephen Schneider was released in April, but his wife has been held since her arrest in December. In his ruling, Bostwick said the government established that she has the financial means to flee to Mexico, has a long-term lease on a home in that country, and has close friends or relatives who could help her avoid detention. ...
