An 8-foot Statue of the bespectacled human rights leader, holding his famous staff, now stands in front of the Old County Courthouse. “This is the man who taught the world about the power of nonviolence,” said Garry Bhojwani, president of the Charlotte Asian Heritage Association, standing next to the Statue. “Everyone knows his work, his method of peace, of sacrifice, of love.” On Tuesday, contractors hoisted the Statue of Mohandas “Mahatma” Gandhi, made of bronze and weighing 1,700 pounds, onto a concrete foundation, built to withstand 150 mph winds, at Trade and Alexander streets. On Sunday, it will be officially unveiled at a public festival celebrating Indian and Asian cultures. A few members of the local Indian community gathered around the Statue Tuesday afternoon, prayed, and sprinkled rice and powder on the feet of the Statue as a blessing and sign of respect. “Mohandas Gandhi is the father of our universe,” said Nimish Bhatt, local director of the Universal Vedic Cultural and Educational Foundation. “Even Martin Luther King Jr. learned from him how to fight with nonviolence.” Three years ago, Bhojwani, a real estate investor, said he noticed that many major cities had Gandhi statues and decided Charlotte should also have one. Local Italian-Americans look forward to Statue of Rocky in Brockton When asked for the proudest moment in his life in 1952, Pierino Marchegiano didn’t mention the one when his son, boxing legend Rocky Marciano, became heavyweight champion of the world. For this Italian immigrant who arrived in Brockton in 1916, learning the English language and being acknowledged as an American citizen as he was discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps after World War I counted more. “A colonel came up and said to him, ‘Pierino, you can be proud to call yourself an American,’” his son, Peter Marciano Sr. of Plymouth, also Rocky’s brother, said as he recalled his father’s response during the interview with Time magazine in 1952. “He just spoke from his heart and went into a totally different direction,” Marciano said of the interview. “It was very clear that we were Americans first and then Italians.” But if he were here to see it, another moment might rank as one of Marchegiano’s most proud — the Statue planned by the World Boxing Council to honor his son in Brockton. The Mohawk Valley attorney who donated $105,000 to Syracuse University for a Statue of fellow alumnus Ernie Davis never got to see the movie about the Heisman Trophy winner that opened nationwide Friday. Kenneth P. Ray, 76, died Thursday at his home in Barneveld after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer, his family said Sunday. Even though Ray never had the chance to see the movie, he did see the unveiling of the Statue, said son Paul Ray of Charlton, Mass. And to him, that was more important. “More than anything, he wanted to give back to Syracuse University,” he said. “It wasn’t an Ernie Davis thing specifically. It was giving back to Syracuse University.” A graduate of Sauquoit Valley Central High School, Kenneth Ray was a Golden Gloves boxing champion who attended SU as an undergraduate on a full scholarship. He later attended Cornell Law School and graduated with honors in 1955. Daughter Jolianne Ray of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, said her father became an attorney somewhat by chance. What started as a joke several years ago is becoming a reality. Kevin McConnell, owner of Life Line Ambulance, said that after the mayor was dead a Statue should be built. “As time went on the idea of a Statue seems even more appropriate,” McConnell said. He approached the mayor for permission to do it. “The mayor was not really excited about it, but said we could if we wanted,” McConnell added. “There were two stipulations he had — no tax money could be used and no city workers could be used.” After getting the mayor’s permission, McConnell sought and received the city council’s approval and also approval from the Marion Chamber of Commerce. McConnell said that even though the Statue will be honoring the mayor, there would be a plaque with a list of all 25 council members who have been elected during his term. The six-foot bronze Statue will stand on a three foot granite pedestal. McConnell started earnestly working on this project several weeks ago and has received $15,000 in pledges. “We have established a board consisting of George Trammel, Steve Lappin, Yolande Peterson, Todd Goodman and Joe Hayes,” McConnell said. There will be one side of the pedestal that will have donor plaques for $500, $1,000 and $1,500.
