By ANTHONY SPANGLER ARLINGTON — Facing questions from prospective voters and debating issues was an unfamiliar battleground for State Sen. Kim Brimer and his Democratic challenger, former Fort Worth City Councilwoman Wendy Davis. Until Tuesday night’s forum sponsored by the Arlington League of Women Voters, the two candidates for State Senate District 10 had faced each other only in lawsuit paperwork on the issue of whether Davis is eligible to run. Audience members’ questions fired at Brimer and Da- vis and Libertarian candi- date Richard Cross, an accountant, ranged from school financing to gas-drilling regulations to congressional redistricting. Neither Brimer, R-Fort Worth, nor Davis mentioned the legal challenge at the forum, and no one in the standing-room-only crowd of about 100 questioned the matter. Touting her years on the City Council, Davis said she focused on neighborhoods, regional transportation and economic development. "I think we are missing that at the State level," she said. "I’m running because I believe that the community needs to have someone really representing their issues." Brimer countered that he has helped pass important bills benefiting economic development. Pointing to his wife in the crowd, Brimer said: "I have a tremendous asset. . . . Your spouse can really make a difference when you are in Austin when you need to get the message out and get votes." The House gave final approval to and sent to the Senate a bill creating a Massachusetts Creative Economy Council last week. The proposal defines the creative economy as “industry sectors that center on providing creative services such as advertising or architecture or creating and promoting intellectual property products such as arts, film, computer games, multimedia or design.” Supporters said that the council would work with designers, artists, cultural institutions and businesses to boost the growing creative economy. They argued that this is an important effort that directly creates jobs and increases business for restaurants and stores in the areas surrounding these ventures. Opponents said that the State should not be singling out specific business sectors for assistance. They argued that the State should make Massachusetts friendlier to all businesses. Only final Senate approval is necessary prior to the measure going to Gov. Patrick. ... Source: www.vaildaily.com --- 3 days ago

The fiscal crisis in Massachusetts flared from spooky crop circles to outright prairie fire this week, and where it stops nobody knows. The adult arithmetic that accompanies this new world order entails no addition, merely subtraction. In the commonwealth, it is not just the financial markets that need a bailout. It is, three months into the fiscal year, the $28.2 billion State budget, the diseased outfit charged with running the State's biggest road and one of its most spectacular underground construction projects, the MBTA, and thousands of homeowners that need bailing out. The evidence * The Turnpike Authority's bond rating inched closer to junk bond status. The folks at Moody's Ratings Services, who can really let their hair down when they're not choosing between Baa2 and Baa3, claimed that board members were "subject to political pressure," an outrageous allegation. At the same time, Gov. Deval Patrick decided to stride toward dispatching the agency to an Amorellian demise. That won't stop the toll hikes or cure the debt, well north of $2 billion. Like civilian flaggers and an education secretariat, this is an old GOP idea that Patrick has resurrected with the evident compliance of Democrats in the Legislature, who historically have opposed such measures. Lawyer and Massport board member James Aloisi called Patrick's move Oct. 2 to abolish the Turnpike Authority "an inevitability." * Patrick, morphing from the big spender wi ...
