Michelle Wie --- and more importantly her often overzealous parents --- have apparently come to their senses. Finally!!!! After not earning her LPGA Tour card via sponsor's exemptions this year, Wie has entered the qualifying school, which begins Sept. 16-19 at Missions Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Wie played in the final group at the site of the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the year's first LPGA major, when she was in eighth grade. Wie, who will be 19 on Oct. 11, didn't earn enough money this year to finish the equivalent of 80th on the LPGA Tour money list. After more than a year of poor play, partly because of a wrist injury, Wie's game began to show signs of life in 2008. She was one shot out of the lead entering the final round of the State Farm Classic in July, but she was disqualified for leaving the scoring tent before signing her card. She later tied for 12th in her final start, the Canadian Women's Open. Some of Wie's problems also stemmed from trying to play in men's events, where she often tried to hit the ball too hard in an attempt to keep up. She hasn't made a cut in eight men's events, and even her longtime coach, David Leadbetter, said it was a bad idea to continue playing against the guys, especially since Wie hasn't won anything since the 2003 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. For now, though, Wie apparently will focus on the gals. After the Rancho Mirage qualifier, she will return to her ... Source: blogs.courant.com --- 25 days ago
Michelle Wie got a good start toward earning her LPGA Tour card Tuesday. The Hawaiian 19-year-old shot a 2-under-par 70 and is tied for eighth in the first sectional qualifying at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Wie failed to win the necessary money while playing on seven sponsor's exemptions this year, though she was a shot out of the lead in LPGA State Farm Classic before being disqualified for failing to sign her scorecard. Wie, a sophomore at Stanford, is four strokes behind Sun-Ju Ahn of South Korea and in a four-way tie that includes Stacy Lewis, who finished third in the U.S. Women's Open in her pro debut in July. Amateur Daria Cummings of Monroe is tied for 61st at 75. Connecticut Women's Open champion Lynn Valentine of East Lyme shot 79 and is tied for 134th. The low 70 and ties after the second round Wednesday advance to the final 36 holes. The low 30 and ties after four rounds qualify for the finals Dec. 5-9 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. The second sectional is Sept. 30-Oct. 3 at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla. Those advancing from the sectionals will join LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status and the players who finished sixth through 15th on the Duramed Futures Tour money list at the finals. ... The Obama campaign seems committed to criticizing Governor Palin for having requested earmarks for her State--something that all governors do. Given Obama's unwillingness to own up to his impressive record for pork-barreling, it's useful to take a look at how Senator Obama has voted on anti-pork amendments offered by Senator Tom Coburn in the current Congress. Against three amendments to kill three pork-barrel projects and redirect the money to housing for victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Against an amendment to shift transportation funds from bike paths and to structurally deficient bridges. Against an amendment to cut the $100 million taxpayer subsidy for the 2008 party political conventions. Against an amendment to express the sense of the Senate that there is a moral obligation to offset the cost of new spending. Against an amendment to shift unspent Department of Agriculture funds to Farm assistance. Against an amendment to kill the Advanced Technology Program -- regarded by many as a Classic example of corporate welfare. Failed to vote on an amendment to kill John Murtha's pork-barrel NDIC and spend the money on counter-drug intelligence. Failed to vote on an amendment to prioritize Sacramento flood protection over more sand for San Diego beaches. Galesburg officials have reached a verbal agreement to send both the boys and girls basketball programs to the Charleston Holiday Tournament starting in 2009. The two-year pact struck on Friday morning — which should be finalized next week — comes days after athletic department officials learned that the boys program would not be welcomed back to the State Farm Holiday Classic after this season. "We haven’t signed it but they are going to send a contract," Galesburg athletic director Ralph Henning said. "But for all intents and purposes we have a verbal commitment so we are happy." State Farm's decision stunned Galesburg athletic department officials, namely Henning and new boys coach Mike Reynolds, given the storied history that both programs have at the Bloomington-Normal-based tournament. The boys program has won the tournament championship five times, while the girls team has captured the title three times and has the most wins in the tournament with 33. Both the boys and girls teams will play in the State Farm Holiday Class this season, which will be held Dec. 26-30. The Charleston tournament, which occurs on the same week as the State Farm Holiday Classic, allows Galesburg to keep the boys and girls programs together at the same tournament. As Henning scouted for alternative tournaments after State Farm's decision, among the top priorities was locating an event that allowed for the dual entry. "Our fans have had that arrangement, ...

The Ladies Professional Golf Association should rethink an English-proficiency requirement it is imposing on LPGA Tour golfers, the title sponsor of its tournament in Springfield says. “Back when this was announced, we spoke to the LPGA and to people with the State Farm Classic,” Phil Supple, a spokesman for Bloomington-based State Farm Insurance, said Wednesday. “We communicated that we were surprised by this decision, and we didn’t understand the reasons for it.” Since 1993, State Farm has been the primary sponsor for Springfield’s tour event, this year won by Ji Young Oh of South Korea, and also is a “corporate sponsor” for the LPGA Tour. While the new policy applies to all tour players, it appears to be aimed at the growing number of the tour’s South Koreans — some of whom have difficulty communicating with American media, fans, sponsors and pro-am partners. Local tournament officials on Wednesday declined comment on the situation. Another State Farm spokesman told Advertising Age, as reported on its Web site, that State Farm was “dumbfounded” by the LPGA’s initiative. “We don’t understand this, and we don’t know why they have done it, and we have strongly encouraged them to take another look at this,” Kip Diggs told Advertising Age. Diggs did not say State Farm would sever ties with the LPGA and the Springfield tournament if the tour goes forward with the language policy. But he implied the policy could weigh into State Farm’s dec ...
