I am a plat, spend 80+ nights every year in Starwood properties. This is the new low I have seen in their chain. Stayed 2 times in Sep. On every check in I was provided the horrible rooms on pretext of an "Executive Room" and best available room on the property. I had to argue with shift manager every time and they moved me to a better one. Guess this is the last thing you want to do after hectic day of business. It seems they have trained the staff with standard apologies when someone complains - " Sorry, this is an old property. We can not do much about it". I have the same response from an admin who responded to my e-mail complaint. Executive Room = worn out leather headboards with visible signs of age, extra squeaky floors, 14" TV, right across the elevator, barely any space to walk, STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROPERTY !!!!!!! ...

We are happy to report that the FlyerTalk ‘powers-that-be’ have selected the Starwood Preferred Guest forum to participate in a pilot program to experiment with the use of photographs within the threads of the forum. Effective now, photos can be embedded in your posts! Here is an example (http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=804143) from the Trip Reports forum of a thread containing photos. That’s the good news. The ‘other’ news is that it is not an especially simple thing to do. We point you to this thread (http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=748616) in the Travel Photography forum for all the technical guidance as to how posting a photo can be accomplished. When reading the referenced thread, all you have to do is mentally substitute “Starwood Forum” every time you read ‘Travel Photography Forum’ (‘TPF’ for short). Our fellow moderator, *sbm12*, did an exceptional job of laying out options and instructions. The two of us will be the first to admit that the technical aspects of this initiative are outside our ‘core competencies,’ so we will leave this thread open for discussion amongst all of you as to the best approaches for posting your prize-winning hotel bathroom shots. :) Naturally, there are a few rules associated with posting pictures within your threads. * Photos should be related to the topic at hand: Starwood hotels. The purpose of this concept is to enable you to illustrate with a photo something hotel-relat ...

I'm thinking of getting a small syndication of local doctors together to fund a new 4P or Element property in a medium size city which currently has very limited hotel options and no Starwood properties at all. If I can build the syndication, we could go with a Hilton Garden Inn, Marriott Residence Inn, Marriott Springhill Suites, or Hilton Homewood Suites, if not the Starwood brand, so there are a variety of options available to us in the mid-tier product space. If there are any developers or owners in the forum, could you share some of the pros/cons, gotchas or other thoughts related to the acquisition, build-out and operation of your hotel? ...

I went to Iowa to visit my folks last week, driving from Austin. I planned to take a different route home, stopping in St. Louis, then 2 days in New Orleans, which I planned some time ago. I booked Friday and Saturday night online at the W New Orleans, and the cancellation policy called for 72 hours notice to cancel with no penalty. Friday morning, having heard about Gustav, I called directly to the hotel and tried to cancel my reservation (New Orleans was a little out of my way to get home and I thought it would be better not to go, since there was the possibility of bad weather and evacuation). I spoke to whomever answered the phone (no, I didn't get a name) and was told that the City had no plans to evacuate, everything was normal, and that I could not cancel my reservation. I got on the road and called when I was closer and was told the same thing. Imagine my surprise when I exited I-10 at Poydras street to find a deserted superdome area surrounded by military vehicles, with military personnel in full garb. At this point, I had been driving 11 hours and was exhausted. I checked in and asked what was going on. I was told no decisions had been made and that, yes, I needed to stay both nights or pay in any event. I went upstairs, furious, and turned on the TV to find that a couple of hours earlier, the mayor and other officials had held a press conference and that they were already calling for special evacuations (people who needed as ...

Starwood Hotels , owners of some fab places to stay like W, Westin, St. Regis and Sheraton hotels, has a new offer called "Better Tomorrows" that starts this week and goes until March 31. For every night you book, you can stay the next night for 50% off. Sounds like a deal, right? Well, maybe. Maybe not. As with all "special" offers, there's a lot of detail in the small print - including that you must prepay for your stay and that it's nonrefundable. If you're certain about your travel plans, that's no problem. But here's a problem that I did find when I eagerly began plotting my holiday stay at Starwood's new Resort at Singer Island in Palm Beach. (Yes, as usual, I'm headed to Florida for Christmas. Why? Because I have a mother who knows how to use a cell phone and guilt.) I found three different rates for three different specials for four nights during the same week. Starwood's "Better Tomorrows" special would cost me $867. Their "Winter Sale" offers a 30% discount and would cost $688. They also have a "4th Night Free" special - the word "free" is so enticing - which would cost $1,067. The last two specials I checked for the very same dates. So you would have two guests staying the same nights, with one paying $400 more and both thinking they got a deal. I know it happens all the time, what with Priceline and corporate discounts and bidding site. Nobody pays the same. So the deal is you gotta do your research. ...

Filed under: Business , Hotels and Accommodations Many business travelers hold a variety of memberships across the travel industry -- a Priority Club membership for points towards Holiday Inn stays, a Skymiles number for miles towards Delta flights, an Emerald Club membership for National rental cars. All of these come in handy for that one time that you're actually on vacation and want to reap some benefit for all of those days on the road with the company. If you're anything like me, you also might accrue your points unevenly; I have a zillion miles on NW but only a few Hilton Honors points because usually when I travel places I stay with friends. Similarly, others might have many hotel or car rental points because their trips are longer or they don't fly places. Airlines realize this and want you to waste your miles in any way possible, so often craft up ways to purge miles irresponsibly (see our recent article on silly frequent flyer mile auctions). In that guise, Starwood Hotels' member program Starwood Preferred Guest has cooked up an engine to use their SPG points to book plane tickets in addition to hotel stays. The nice thing is that the number of points required is tied to the price of the ticket -- it isn't poorly determined by route or demand -- so prices are somewhat tied to the open market. The not-so-nice thing is that it isn't a super value for your SPG points. Most SPG members I've lurked over are finding that it's ...
