It"s once again the economy that is driving a presidential campaign, and almost nobody is "stupid" about recognizing that in 2008. When over 80 percent of Americans tell pollsters that they think the country is headed in the wrong direction, it reflects a whole range of issues - the war in Iraq, America"s place in the world, the state of the nation"s moral and civic health, Climate change, etc. But nothing drives voters unrest quite like their pocketbook concerns. Soaring energy prices, the home mortgage crisis, stock market plunges, health care costs and creeping inflation fears are adding to those concerns on almost a daily basis. So it"s no surprise that the presidential candidates expect to be spending the bulk of their time between now and the election talking about it. Given the complexity of the problems, and the lack of any clear-cut, easy answers, it also isn"t shocking that the candidates have fallen into all-too familiar rhetoric on the subject either. Look at yesterday"s debate over taxes for example. Trying to return his party to the champion of smaller government and spending discipline, John McCain pledged to slash federal spending and balance the budget by the end of his first term in office (a questionable prospect at best) while keeping taxes low. Now comes the hard part. UNC Charlotte Chancellor Phil Dubois recommended to the college's board of trustees Thursday morning that the school establish a football program starting in 2013 in the college division formerly known as I-AA. But Thursday's recommendation was not an ending for the long-running “Will there be football?” saga at Charlotte. It's only the beginning. I want football at UNC Charlotte. But even after this, I'm not certain it will ever happen. The financial hurdles– assuming the Dubois plan is accepted in mid-November when the trustees vote on it – are extremely high. “The cold, Stark financial reality we face is that those who say they want football are going to have to help pay for football,” Dubois said in his speech to the trustees. And that's even after Dubois tamped down significantly the recommendations from the Football Feasibility Committee, which had advocated UNCC starting football a year earlier (in 2012) and trying to enter Division I-A by 2016. Dubois instead believes that UNCC should stay in Division I-AA a lot longer than 2016 and will give no timetable for a move to college football's highest division, believing that to be a decision for a future chancellor. "The implications of that are absolutely staggering - not only for biodiversity, but also for economics." While I was out this morning going to the farmers' market and getting breakfast, you know normal Sunday morning activities, the Prime Minister met with the Governor General, dissolved Parliament and called an election. (Personally I quite prefer my own Sunday morning activities.) Canadians will be heading to the polls on Tuesday, October 14 to elect a new government, even thought Stephen Harper said that it's going to be a tight election and they are anticipating another minority government . So why are we going to the polls ? It is a cruel but apt analogy, and that's why the big push for more domestic oil production is so disturbing. John McCain has created the "Drill Here, Drill Now" mantra, as though he wants to sink a well wherever he's standing at the moment. When vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin gave her coming-out address at the Republican National Convention, the crowd started changing " Drill, Baby, Drill ." McCain's selection of Palin was a concession to conservatives in many ways, including those who think Climate change is liberal mythology and fossil energy is the fuel of the future . But what would life be like for an America still addicted to oil? The nature of addiction is that the drug is in control. It trumps morality, judgment, and common sense. When comparing the U.S. presidential candidates' green credentials, both contenders support greater action to address Climate change through a cap on U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. While Republican candidate John McCain's reduction targets are more modest than the promises of Democrat Barack Obama , either candidate should offer a significant shift from the largely stalled policies of the current administration. Among the vice presidential candidates, however, the choices offer significant contrasts in ideology and policy. Democrat Joe Biden supports action that reflects the stance taken by Senator Obama. America’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a Stark warning on the nation’s coral reefs yesterday. US reefs near human populations face “intense” threats while even the most remote reefs are troubled, it says. The massive 2008 state of coral reef ecosystems report says a conservative message would be that nearly half of reefs are not in good condition and are in long-term decline. “The report shows that this is a global issue,” says Tim Keeney, deputy assistant secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere (press release). “While the report indicates reefs in general are healthier in the Pacific than the Atlantic, even remote reefs are subject to threats stemming from Climate change, as well as illegal fishing and marine debris.” The report states:Since the last reporting effort [in 2005], the condition of resources declined, while threats in the majority of jurisdictions have been increasing. For about half of the jurisdictions, threats such as Climate change/coral bleaching, coral disease, and tourism and recreation have not changed significantly over the last three years, but have increased over the past 10-25 years. It took 270 scientists looking at 15 ecosystems to compile the near-600 page monster of a report, presented to the International Coral Reef Symposium in Fort Lauderdale. Coral reefs aren’t being protected against Climate change despite the protective zones set up to do just that, say researchers in a report just published in PLoS ONE. ( Paper and press release ) Lead researcher Nick Graham from Newcastle University says that the No-Take Areas (NTAs) set up in the 1960s and 70s were devised when Climate change wasn’t the big deal it is now. These zones have had no effect on the health of the coral, he says, and are in the wrong place. The NTAs are often small, and are surrounded by exploited areas, the report points out. The researchers looked at different fish populations in areas that were protected, and areas that weren’t. The results were Stark – “irrespective of body size and trophic categorization, NTAs provided no clear benefits for any of the fish groups in terms of their change in response to coral decline,” the report reads. The work follows a report earlier this year that fishing statistics for tropical regions were wrong, and that overfishing is a much bigger problem than thought. Elsewhere, Australian researchers are saying that warmer oceans will mean more coral diseases. They, like Graham and colleagues, traced the fate of a reef after a major bleaching event in 1998, but in the Great Barrier Reef off Australian, rather than the Indian Ocean.
