It won’t be long before residents can once again gather for coffee and baked goods in Sharon Square. The 5 Post Office Sq. location, vacated last week by Starbucks, will soon be home to French Memories Bakery & Café. The lease has been signed and the keys are being handed over to the new owners today. On Friday, Sept. 12, Starbuck’s closed its doors in Sharon for the final time. Customers had been notified in early August about the store’s final day, according to Starbucks’ corporate office. On Tuesday, July 1, the corporate office announced its decision to close approximately 600 company-operated stores in the U.S. The Sharon and Stoughton stores were on the list of the 7 stores in Massachusetts to close. The Stoughton Starbucks’ has yet to announce its Closing date. French Memories Bakery & Café is slated to open by the beginning of November. The downtown Sharon location will become the second of the same name, but the fourth bakery for the owners. The businesses are owned by Debbie and Philippe Odier of Duxbury and Bruno & Barbara Biagianti of Beacon Hill. The other French Memories Bakery & Café is located at 459 Washington St. in Duxbury and has been open for 19 years. The Odiers and Biagiantis also own Café Vanille which has two locations. Starbucks will alter its breakfast menu to appeal to a wider audience in the coffee-chain’s latest restructuring and re-imaging move. The Seattle-based chain has been Closing stores and cutting jobs as it has struggled in recent months to deal with slowing sales. After introducing a new blend of coffee meant to draw in the average coffee drinker, Starbucks now says it is bringing in five new breakfast items to draw in more health-conscious crowds. The new items will range from muffins to granola bars to a hard-boiled-egg plate. Once one of the fastest-growing companies in the country, Starbucks has seen lower consumer spending cut into sales, as people debate the cost of a vanilla latte versus a gallon of gas. As breakfast sales have helped boost other fast-food services, Starbucks hopes the move can do the same for its stores. In June, the chain implemented a new coffee blend — Pike’s Place Roast — to a mixed reaction. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal , about 50 stores have already been notified that they will be Closing by July 31, and the list will be made public by July 15. The Journal writes of anxiety for the Starbucks faithful who have come to appreciate the caffeine brew and do not have satisfactory alternatives. There are two stores in walking distance of my office and when Starbucks opened the second one about 18 months ago I was very surprised.
