Blizzard apparently has yet another project in the works, and so their game portfolio is not just limited to the big three we know today. Senior vice president Rob Pardo of Blizzard claimed in a recent interview with German news site OnlineWelten that there was another "unknown" game cooking in their kitchen. Before the interview, we all heard that Blizzard was looking for new blood to help them on a mystery next-generation MMO project. This project is the same unannounced game that Pardo said existed. No other details on the project were divulged, nor were any hints aggressively milked. On that note, however, the senior VP did clue in to Blizzard's plans to revamp Blizzard's premier online multiplayer service, Battle.net, which will result in the inclusions of new features. Though asked about future costs in utilizing the service, Pardo did not care to comment if the new features would incur additional costs on the players' part. Now here's the kicker: Blizzard hopes to unveil their ideas for expanding Battle.net's feature list by the time they implement StarCraft II Beta. This officially confirms the rumors that a Beta will be conducted to test the real-time strategy engine, units and tactics within real-life multiplayer matches, even though the "when" portion is still up in the air. For World of Warcraft gamers, don't you worry - Wrath of the Lich King 's progress will not be hampered by the inclusion of Diablo 3 to Blizzar ...

Update: Later in the conference call, it was revealed that World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King will arrive between October and December . Original Story : Blizzard Entertainment CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaime today discussed the effect that the recent launch of Funcom's Age of Conan had on World of Warcraft. "Age of Conan released with some initial success," Morhaime noted. "We did see some of our players leave, [but] about 40% of those players have returned to World of Warcraft." According to the CEO, World of Warcraft has a key advantage as competitors are going up against "a product that has been continually enhanced, expanded and refined for almost four years now." Morhaime refused to specify a release date for either StarCraft 2 or Diablo 3, merely noting that both games were "heavily in development" and that the studio is "commi... ...

For the past few years, achievements have been all the rage on Xbox 360. The recent PS3 v2.4 firmware update added in support for trophies, Sony’s answer to achievements, and PlayStation Home has promised to make trophies a big deal. So imagine the possibility of achievements in World of Warcraft ; a scenario we learned would become reality with the game’s second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King . As it turns out, there’s more to Blizzard’s plans for achievements than just tacking on some goals to their insanely popular MMO — Diablo III and StarCraft II will be getting in on the achievement love, too. “Eventually, our plans are for the Achievement system to become an account-based system,” WoW lead designer Jeff Kaplan told MTV Multiplayer. With these new Blizzard Accounts, you’ll be able to earn points to add to your “Blizzard Level,” which Kaplan admitted is “basically a gamerscore” when the subject of Xbox Live’s system came up. “For now the points are just a WoW character score. As we graduate to that Blizzard Account system, which is right on the horizon, it will switch over to a Blizzard Level.” He added, “Your WoW score would be just one factor that will go into your Blizzard Level. And rather than call it a ’score,’ we just wanted it to be like you’re leveling up on Blizzard games… You’ll have this Blizzard identity, and you’ll be able to see things like ‘Oh, this guy was great at Diablo III , but he never played StarCraft and ...

Give up? It turns out Asian gamers want to smoke and game at the same time. There are big design differences between American and Asian-based MMOs, Perfect World product manager Jon Belliss told me yesterday, while showing off Chinese-born MMO, “Perfect World International.” One difference is grinding. Asian gamers love grinding far more than the rest of the world. Additionally, they also play almost exclusively with the mouse. Western MMOs are typically controlled with a mouse and keyboard. For the longest time, Belliss couldn’t figure out why this dichotomy existed. Then, he observed the answer himself — cigarettes. A large portion of the MMO audience in Asia spend their time in crowded net cafes, where they chain smoke in one hand and grind to the next level, mouse-in hand, with the other. Does that explain why “StarCraft” is so popular over there, too? ...

A happy Independence Day greeting to our readers! Headlining this week's MMORPG Weekend Warrior are talks of a new Blizzard MMORPG, even as we cover news of Age of Conan 's staggering population growth since its launch several weeks ago. It's a good thing Funcom 's right there to keep it running properly. RuneScape is in the business of facelifts, while EVE Online 's latest expansion gets its very first  patch update. Let's not forget about Gotham City, where a caped crusader along with a couple memorable DC characters have been spotted making their online debut. World of Warcraft may already be quite the epic MMORPG - with a gamer population the size of a small country -  but that doesn't seem to be stopping Blizzard from planning bigger things. Recent reports indicate that the company is looking to recruit new employees for a yet-to-be named MMO project, one which Blizz exec Rob Pardo hinted at in a separate interview. Link: Blizzard claims another next-gen MMO, planning new Battle.net features, hints StarCraft 2 Beta   As the old saying goes, time waits for no man. If you happen to have been thinking of signing up for Runescape recently, you may be surprised to know that Jagex Ltd . has upped the subscription fee on their long-running MMORPG. On the lighter side of matters, progress on its graphical facelift is going along well - just remember to check if your PC's up to specs if you want to go along for the ride. Link: RuneS ...

Filed under: Mac , PC , RPGs While we don't know when we'll get our hands on Diablo 3 (our guess is sometime between StarCraft 2 and a Lost Vikings MMO), now is as good of a time as any to look back on the previous Diablo game. While you could download the full version at the Blizzard Store for $20 (and the Lord of Destruction expansion pack for $20 more), the try-before-you-buy enthusiasts at Big Download have tracked down the demo version for you to try out. We know there are a few Joystiq readers who never experienced Diablo 2 . Folks, feel ashamed no longer, download here . Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...

Filed under: Culture , Mac , PC , MMO , Business Blizzard announced today that tickets for BlizzCon 2008 will go on sale Monday, August 11. Tickets will be priced at $100 a pop (as if Blizzard and co. weren't already deep enough in our pockets) and be available directly from blizzcon.com . The third semi-regular gathering of elves, trolls and spacemen will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center in -- where else? -- Anaheim, California on October 10 and 11. For those unwilling to venture forth, DirecTV will be broadcasting a pay per view version right to your dome in "crystal-clear HD" (scientifically proven to be better than real life). As a bonus, new DirecTV subscribers will get the televised BlizzCon access for free. While no one knows for sure just what blessings Blizzard will bestow upon its faithful at BlizzCon, you can bet on seeing more of the Wrath expansion for World of Warcraft , along with some new details about StarCraft II and Diablo 3 . If you plan to make the pilgrimage out to Anaheim, buy your tickets early -- there's not exactly room for everyone . [Via WOW Insider ] Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...

Filed under: Betas , MMO , World of Warcraft During Activision Blizzard 's conference call with investors today following the release of Activision 's final stand alone financial results (you can listen into the repeat of the conference on the publisher's web site), Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime stated that the release date of their next commercial expansion pack for their hit MMO World of Warcraft would be released sometime in the last quarter of 2008 (October-December). The expansion pack, Wrath of the Lich King , recently entered a new phase of beta testing . In other Blizzard news, Morhaime said that their other two announced projects, Diablo III and StarCraft II , were both "heavily in development" but as usual he would not talk about release dates. He also said that they are staffing up for working on their next unannounced MMO project but would not comment further on that project.   Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

July 3, 2008 6:00 AM In addition to work on Wrath of the Lich King , StarCraft II , and the recently announced Diablo III , Blizzard Entertainment has a fourth title in progress. In a video interview with Trailer Welten Rob Pardo confirmed the untitled project, which was described last year on Blizzard's Job Openings page as an "Next Gen MMO." A few months ago you offered a job on the official Blizzard webpage, Considering a next gen MMO... A community manager added that its about a game that hasn't been announced yet. Is there any new information on that or is Diablo the mentioned next gen MMO? Rob Pardo: No, its obviously not, since it is not an MMO! We have another development team, that is... So there is still one project? Rob Pardo: Yeah, there is still one "unknown" project... Could this project mark a departure from Blizzard's "Craft" universes? Only time will tell. Filed under: Biz , Action , Casual , MMO , Multiplayer , Rhythm , RPG , RTS , Strategy MCV magazine recently spoke with Activision Blizzard CFO Thomas Tippl on the recent merger between Activision and Vivendi that resulted in the largest gaming conglomerate in existence. Due to the high number of popular franchises developed by Activision and Blizzard individually, MCV was curious as to which titles might be considered high priority in terms of the new juggernaut's future plans. Not surprisingly, Tippl was quick to herald Guitar Hero , which he stated has "sold more than any video game in the history of the industry," and the continued focus on Call of Duty . On Blizzard's side of the equation is the ever-popular World of WarCraft , which now boasts more than 11 million worldwide subscribers, making it the leading subscription-based MMO. Coupled with last year's StarCraft II announcement and the more recent unveiling of Diablo III , Tippl didn't have to work hard to convince MCV (or anyone else in the gaming world) that Blizzard's line-up will be as strong as ever through the next several years. Specifics regarding stock shares were also discussed. When asked if Vivendi's 52 per cent holding classified the merger as more of an acquisition of Activision than a partnership, Tippl discussed the company's recently announced self-tender , " which will last for 20 business days. During that period of time, shareholders who want to sell ...

Filed under: Biz , Interviews , MMO German site OnlineWelten spoke with Blizzard Senior VP Rob Pardo at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational last week. There was a lot of imprecise pondering about what it is that makes Blizzard so successful, but there was one specific tidbit that stood out in the interview. OnlineWelten referenced some job adverts posted on Blizzard's company website -- adverts for jobs in a team working on a "Next-Gen MMO." Then came the question: is Diablo 3 the Next-Gen MMO? "No, it's obviously not, since it's not an MMO," said Pardo. "We have another development team ... there's still an uknown project." So, just in case you were wondering, the Next-Gen MMO is still on. But we don't know a damned thing about it. We even once assumed that it was the project codenamed Hydra, but we recently discovered that Hydra was Diablo 3 . So ... Galaxy of StarCraft ? Sit tight.
