1st Sgt. Eric Geressy of Company E, 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, assigned to Multi-National Division-Baghdad, Iraq, was recently awarded the Silver Star for his actions during a major firefight on Sept. 4, 2007. The award was pinned to his chest by his grandfather, Mitchell Rech, who was a recipient of the Bronze Star for his service with the 82nd Airborne Division during WII. 1SGT Geressy, typical of such men, felt he was only doing his job. "I am humbled. I don't think I did anything to deserve this. To me the number one priority for us was establishing the defense - make our position one we could fright from," Geressy said. "And I know everybody was mad at me at first because I made them work like dogs preparing for the worst case scenario, but I wanted them to be prepared." Well earned, indeed. The citation reads, in part: During the morning of 4 September 2007, the Company's Executive Officer was on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Falcon supervising the retrofitting of the company's vehicles. The Company Commander and the Fire Support Officer were at FOB Falcon attending a meeting; First Sergeant Geressy was the only company level leader at the COP. In the early afternoon, the Company received orders to investigate a possible Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED). While one of the platoons was investigating the VBIED they came under enemy fire. First Sergeant Geressy deployed the Quick Reaction Force (Q ... Source: copthetruth.typepad.com --- 23 days ago
Sgt. 1st Class Pedro A. Munoz, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), was awarded the Sliver Star today, posthumously, for his actions in Shindand, Afghanistan, on Jan. 2, 2005. The award was accepted by his widow, Gisela Munoz, and his daughter, Dalia. Via USASOC: While clearing a compound in pursuit of a mid-level Taliban commander, a Taliban fighter opened fire from inside a room containing women and children, said Col. Mark J. Gordon, deputy commander of 1st Bn., 7th SFG(A). Although he was wounded, Munoz returned fire and killed the Taliban fighter, enabling those in his detachment to proceed in clearing the building. “Sergeant First Class Munoz continued to support his detachment,” Gordon said, “firing selectively, engaging only armed combatants without harming any non-combatants. His dedication and his courage are evident through his actions: protecting innocent life, staying in the fight without thought for himself while supporting his teammates—allowing them to successfully accomplish their mission.” [...] “You look at a picture of Munoz,” said Lt. Gen. Robert W. Wagner, commander of the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, “and you see a 47-year-old senior Soldier who has served our nation with extraordinary honor, distinction, pride and accomplishment. I suspect that some of the things that he’s most proud of are his wife and his daughter, two incredible people who have served our nation.” All the way, indeed. ...

A white method actor blacking up for a role as an African American Soldier and a movie Star playing "a retard" in a film called Simple Jack are just two of the controversial subjects in Ben Stiller's latest film, Tropic Thunder, a war-movie spoof the panel will be discussing on Friday's Newsnight Review and which you can watch clips of on Review's website. There has been an outcry in the States, particularly from disability rights groups. But can a topic alone make humour offensive or should we just judge a film by whether we laugh? Should we be celebrating the fact that filmmakers are flexing their satirical muscles and tackling uncomfortable subjects? American stand up has always been about taboo breaking - from Richard Pryor, through Bill Hicks to Sarah Silverman - is it about time that mainstream films did likewise? ...
