Daniel Dantas, a brilliant and controversial banker, is waiting to see if he will go to jailIT IS three o’clock in the afternoon, and Daniel Dantas has just discovered that $300m of his bank’s money has been frozen by the courts. The morning’s papers were filled with stories about Mr Dantas, government spies, wiretapping and money-laundering. His Sao Paulo offices, which have the usual accoutrements of investment-bank meeting rooms—Venetian blinds revealing a commanding view of the city, paper and pencils branded with the bank’s name—feel like a fort under siege. Mr Dantas enters the room, places his various mobile phones on a table and removes their batteries. At least one of them has been bugged by Brazil’s Spy agency, he says, turning it into a listening device.Mr Dantas is the most controversial businessman in Brazil. The press has tried to connect his name with every big Scandal of the past ten years in the wide grey area where business and government meet. But none of the accusations has ever been proven. In July Mr Dantas was taken into custody for a day but was released without charge. Mr Dantas is often portrayed as a kind of dark genius of Brazilian finance: Darth Vader with spreadsheets. He has, he notes in a tone of incredulity that perhaps contains a little pride, appeared on the cover of one of the country’s business magazines more often than George Bush. ... ...

WASHINGTON The former No. 3 official at the CIA pleaded guilty yesterday to defrauding the government, closing an investigation that linked the nation's pre-eminent Spy service to the corruption Scandal involving former Republican Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham of California. In admitting that he abused his rank to steer lucrative contracts to cronies, Kyle Dustin "Dusty" Foggo, the agency's one-time executive director, became one of the highest-ranking officials in CIA history to be convicted of criminal charges. The deal involved major concessions from prosecutors, who allowed Foggo to admit guilt to a single fraud charge, wiping out 27 additional counts that included money laundering and conspiracy. Foggo, 53, faces up to 20 years in custody and a $250,000 fine, but prosecutors indicated that they would recommend he serve no more than 37 months. Foggo was accused of directing millions of dollars in business to a longtime friend, Brent Wilkes, who is serving a 12-year sentence after being convicted of bribing Cunningham ...

The 2008 US Presidential Election is well on its way, and what news could be more enticing than an alleged sex Scandal involving one of the candidates? The latest e-mail spam run on the loose contains a link to an supposed pornographic video of Democratic candidate Senator Barack Obama. In order to conceal the trojan's primary intent, a pornographic video will be opened once the file is downloaded and executed. Along with the video named 01.wmv , the trojan drops another malicious file onto the system called 809.exe . Next, it registers the file siemens32.dll as a Browser Helper Object (BHO). As a result, every time Internet Explorer is launched, the malicious BHO is being referenced. As soon as the user connects to specific banking sites, especially well-known banks in Germany, the trojan collects the information gathered from the bank transactions then posts it to the "Medved Hotel", Finland. Interestingly, there is no Medved Hotel in Finland. The website, however, looks real enough to fool unsuspecting users and the layout was apparently borrowed from a real Finnish Hotel, Bear Inn , in order to make a bogus site out of it. Can you spot the difference? Both the websites are almost the same except for the discrepancy on the right side of the page. Currently, we have reported this to local authorities and they are working on getting the site shut down. All of the malicious files mentioned are detected as Trojan-Spy:W32/Banker.ISO ...

The old adage in Washington is that a gaffe is when someone tells the truth and it's inconvenient. Carly Fiorina did that this week. The former chairman and C.E.O. of Hewlett Packard, now known as H.P. , who is a major supporter and spokesperson for the Republican party and the McCain campaign, let loose that the 72-year-old Arizona Senator is not qualified to run a major corporation. She went on to note that neither is Joe Biden, Barack Obama, or Sarah Palin. They're different skills, she noted. The full video of her remarks can be seen here . Press reports say that senior McCain aides were furious, and that Fiorina won't be seen on the trail for awhile. But Fiorina was right, and I suspect most business executives like her would agree. The skills needed to run a corporation aren't easily transferred to politics, or vice versa. I know that Fiorina's comments bear the weight of her having been kicked out of H.P. after the stock fell more than 50 percent on her watch. The fact is that the Compaq merger, which critics said would kill the company, didn't, and it probably set the stage for more acquisitions like current C.E.O. Mark Hurd picking up E.D.S. this year and doing a great job for shareholders. She may have been at odds with the H.P. culture, but clearly the board she dealt with was dysfunctional as evidenced by the Get Smart-like Spy Scandal that followed her. Separate Fiorina from her words and you've got to concede that s ...

Compared with politicians in other countries, German political leaders usually seem a drab, stolid sort, the occasional Spy or sex Scandal notwithstanding. But when it comes to global finance, they are apt to make bold pronouncements. In 2005, the chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Franz Müntefering, referred to private-equity firms as "locusts." Now, Germany's finance minister, Peer Steinbrück, says that the credit crisis threatens the United States' status as a financial superpower. "The United States will lose its status as the superpower in the world financial system," he said. "The world financial system will become more multipolar." The cause of the credit crisis, he told the Bundstag today, is the "irresponsible overemphasis of the laissez-faire principle." Steinbrück pointed to the quest for maximum profits and huge bonuses. "Investment bankers and politicians in New York, Washington and London were not willing to give these up," he said. Of course, Herr Minister has a personal reason to be bitter about the credit crisis . Steinbrück is on the supervisory board of the state-controlled bank KfW , which transferred some $425 million to Lehman Brothers a little more than an hour before the Wall Street firm filed for bankruptcy protection. "Germany's Dumbest Bank!" screamed the front-page headline in the newspaper Bild . by Jeffrey Cane Also on Portfolio.com: Tough Times, Even in Tinseltown How Did We Get Into This Mess ...

Matt Cooper reports from St. Paul: I wrote one of the first pieces on Carly Fiorina after she became the Republican National Committee's Victory Chair, a position making her John McCain's cheerleader in chief. As I'm sitting here in the Xcel Energy Center, catching up on some work before tonight's session of the Republican convention, I have to wonder if America really wants to take advice from Fiorina, who is due to speak tonite. After last night's weirdly economy-free evening, tonight the convention digs deep into the economy—at least in the pre-prime time hour of 10 p.m. Eastern. Besides Fiorina, eBay's former C.E.O. Meg Whitman and Mitt Romney, he of Bain Capital and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, will speak. Given their track records in business, Whitman and Romney are inherently interesting. Given her record—being tossed out by her board of directors at H.P.—it's a little more questionable about Fiorina. In some ways she's gotten a bad rap. The merger with Compaq, for which she was so roundly criticized, turned out okay and the company continues to grow rapidly through M&A. The Spy Scandal that followed her tenure suggests that the board she was dealing with really was, to put it charitably, dysfunctional. Still, Fiorina's tenure makes what she has to say more suspect. I'm not one of those who thinks she's a joke. Far from it. But forgive me if I take what she has to say tonight with skepticism. We haven't seen her remar ...
