The second half of the high school football season kicks off tonight, and it arguably could be the biggest week thus far for many area teams. A victory in Week Six over a quality opponent could be just the right tonic for a handful of Western Stark County squads looking to develop some momentum heading into the season’s homestretch. As of now just two area teams – Tuslaw and Northwest – reside among the top 10 in their respective regions when it comes to computer points, which were released for the first time this season on Thursday afternoon. A win for any number of teams tonight, though, would go a long way toward improving their postseason chances. When it comes to big, it usually doesn’t get much larger than when the St. Ignatius Wildcats visit Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium, as they will this evening. The Wildcats are once again one of the top squads in Northeast Ohio, with just a Week One loss to Glenville dotting an otherwise spotless record. They have also been a scourge to the Tigers during the teams’ relatively brief history of meetings, as St. Ignatius has taken 10 of 11 against the Tigers. Massillon is coming off one of its best all-around performances of the season in last week’s 34-0 shutout of Garfield. A win over Ignatius – the No. 2-ranked team in Division I Region 1 – would certainly catapult the Tigers up the Division I, Region 2 computer rankings, while also giving first-year coach Jason Hall a statement win ... The temptation to abandon the long quest for multiple, accurate sources and settle down in a monogamous relationship with Wikipedia can prove almost overwhelming — especially to the busy college student. Therein lies the challenge for local institutions of higher education: Training students to think critically about their research without discouraging them from following the trail of breadcrumbs that so often begins with sites like Wikipedia. Instructors say the solution, if it can be called that, is to allow students to use Wikipedia as a Springboard for greater discovery. “Part of what we hope to develop in school are the critical thinking skills to make sure (students’) information is accurate and reliable,” said Jocelyn Tipton, acting head of reference at Eastern Illinois University’s Booth Library.
