This is a quiz for Fans of the Olympics, yes, but I’ll say right now it’s about women Olympic competitors. I know, I know, you guys—but I bet there are PLENTY of things that NONE of us know about women’s participation and it’s time we all got ourselves educated, including me. I hadn’t given this any thought until I got a newsletter from the National Women’s History Museum, an organization attempting to create what its title suggests. The information below comes from their newsletter or website. More about that group later and, for a bonus, a little about the Worcester Women’s History Project, almost in our backyard.             And now the quiz. Answers where they should be, at the end, though I don’t think we can manage to put them upside down. 1) Why weren’t women even allowed to watch the ancient Olympics in Greece? (Hint: This is the best answer of the whole quiz!) 2) When were women first allowed to compete? In what event? 3) Who was the first American woman to win? When? In what sport? 4) Who was the first African American woman to win a gold medal? When? 5) What woman diver won 77 national titles and four gold medals? (We don’t know her name? My how fleeting fame...) 6) Who was the first American woman to win a gold medal in gymnastics? When? (This should be the easiest question.) 7) What sport did Lillian Copeland medal in 1932? 8, 9, and 10) What one woman scored both goals for the U.S. team in its victory over Norway in ...
