Why didn't someone think of this earlier? Spirit Airlines will be the first airline to sell advertising space inside its planes, the company announced yesterday. Michael Pewther, Sales Director of the program dubbed Mile High Media, is quoted as saying that inviting companies to use cabin space to advertise will help "offest record fuel prices, which helps us to continue offering our customers ... low fares." Spirit's first advertiser will be the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, which will have colorful displays on overhead bins, tray tables and bulkheads, plus brochures in the seat backs. Subways, buses and trains have posted ads inside for years, so I guess it was about time an airline started doing it too. Plus, when was the last time an airline tried to defray costs without increasing fees (Spirit already charges for checked bags) or service cuts? What do you think? ...

Spirit Airlines, the little low-cost carrier, reported the best operating margin of the U.S. carriers in the second quarter.
