The Spartan Light Metal Products plant at 4649 Highway MM west of Hannibal is among six Spartan plants that are reducing their workforce. According to a report from the Spartan Corporate Services Center in St. Louis, a limited reduction-in-force is taking place, including both hourly and salaried employees. Personnel at the Hannibal plant referred questions to the corporate headquarters. Philip Zampogna, Spartan’s vice president of human resources, announced on July 29 that the affected employees were being notified, beginning the week of July 28, with the date for layoffs being on or before Aug. 1. He was not available Monday or Tuesday to explain how many local employees are affected by the layoff. Zampogna said the overall weakness in the U.S. economy, higher gasoline prices and lower consumer spending caused Spartan’s customers to make dramatic changes in their order patterns. This is expected to continue throughout 2008, he said. “Although we have a diversified customer base within the automotive and commercial sectors, these broader economic trends continue to affect sales volumes across all customers. As a result, we are re-sizing our workforce to match or employment needs with the expected lower sales volumes of our customers.” He added that Spartan hopes these adjustments may be temporary but it is difficult to predict in the current market environment.
