The National Rifle Association is intensifying it's anti- Barack Obama media campaign, launching an additional TV spot -- including a Spanish-language version -- in several news battleground states. But the Illinois senator is defending his position on gun control and using other strategies to try to reach out to a segment of the population targeted by the NRA: rural voters. The NRA has already spent several million dollars running ads in Colorada, New Mexico and Pennsylvania, but the group is now moving into media markets in Florida, Ohio and Virginia with a new spot, " Texas Law Enforcement Officer " (subscription) . The ad features Andy Vaquera , a retired Police officer from Texas, who says that in his line of work he has "seen firsthand the tragedy that happens when people are stripped of their gun rights." Footage of crime scenes and red and blue flashing lights play on screen as Vaquera evokes what is a sensitive issue in many states: illegal immigration. "Families should be able to defend themselves against rapists, drug dealers and other criminals illegally crossing our borders," he insists, claiming that Obama would prevent Americans from being able to use guns in self-defense. Obama is firing back with his own ad (subscription) featuring a lifetime NRA member, Greg West , expressing his support for the Democratic nominee. "I hunt, I fish, I love the outdoors," West says, adding his love for America to that list and pro ... Source: www.statesman.com --- 3 days ago
The National Rifle Association is airing an anti-Obama television ad in English and Spanish that links illegal immigrant criminals with gun rights. The ad features Andy Vaquera, identified as a retired Texas Police officer. He says: “Families should be able to defend themselves against rapists, drug dealers and other criminals illegally crossing our borders. But Barack Obama didn’t think we should be allowed to use a firearm for self-defense. He even voted to allow the prosecution of people who used firearms to defend their families in their own homes. That’s just wrong.” The ad is part of an aggressive NRA campaign against Obama that includes a Web site — http://www.gunbanobama.com. The site claims that Obama would be the “most anti-gun president in American history.” Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt recently told the LA Times that “Obama has always believed that the 2nd Amendment protects the individual right to own a firearm.” See the NRA ad here . Photo: Cesar A. Perales, seated, discussing the logo of Latino Justice P.R.L.D.E.F. with John Garcia. In 1972, three young lawyers, intent on protecting the civil rights of New York's burgeoning and largely impoverished Puerto Rican population, formed a legal advocacy group, aptly named the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund. The group's early cases forced the school system to implement bilingual teaching, compelled the Police Department to hire and promote more Latino officers and led to voter information that was provided in Spanish. The current caseload of the group, now one of the city's oldest and most prominent Latino advocacy organizations, has grown well beyond its original purview, ranging up and down the Eastern Seaboard and including plaintiffs from Bolivia, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru, in addition to Puerto Ricans. In part to reflect its expanded mission and client base, the group is planning to officially change its name on Monday to Latino Justice P.R.L.D.E.F. The change also reflects broader shifts in New York's Latino population, the group's officials say. "Latinos are beginning to see themselves as a group, as a community," said Cesar A. Perales, the president and general counsel of the organization and one of its three founders. "There is a coming together of identification in a common struggle." Mr. Perales said that this shared identity had arisen in part because of a b ... Find more results for Spanish Police on RSSMicro.com |
