I am accustomed to receiving e-mail from Amazon.com, as I am a fiercely loyal customer who shops there quite frequently. But it took me by surprise this weekend to discover that that mounds of porn spam and junk e-mail laced with computer viruses are actively being blasted from digital real estate leased to the e-commerce giant. I wasn't the only one who spotted it. Websense Security Labs issued an alert about the spam attacks on Monday, but it didn't name Amazon as the source. The advisory rightly noted that it had discovered "a substantial number of spam messages utilizing a reliable social engineering trick." The junk mail claims to have been sent from Microsoft, and urges the recipient to install an attached security update. Windows users who fall for the ruse will have their systems infected with a backdoor Trojan horse program that gives the attackers easy access with which ...

Breaking Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail’s CAPTCHAs, has been an urban legend for over two years now, with do-it-yourself CAPTCHA breaking services, and proprietary underground tools assisting Spammers, phishers and malware authors into registering hundreds of thousands of bogus accounts for spamming and fraudulent purposes. This post intends to make this official, by covering an underground service [...] ...

Comment Spammers , trackback spam, stupid bots and AVG linkscanner eating into your bandwidth and server resources? Here’s how to put a dent in their activities with a few mod_rewrite rules. I hate those blogs that send me fake trackbacks and pingbacks. Unfortunately it’s impossible to stop but this morning I figured out a way of stopping some of them. Look through the log files of your web server for the string ‘ “-” “-”‘. Lots of requests there aren’t there? I found 914 requests yesterday. Those are requests without a USER_AGENT or HTTP_REFERER and almost all of them are suspicious because they weren’t followed by requests for images, stylesheets. or Javascript files. Unfortunately the WordPress cron server also falls into this category so you need to filter out requests from your own server’s IP address. This morning I checked up on a spam trackback that came in. This one came from 85.177.33.196: URL: /xmlrpc.php HTTP_RAW_POST_DATA: pingback.ping http://7wins. eu/cbprod/detail_10347/cure+your+tight+foreskin.html http://ocaoimh.ie/2005/03/01/i-am-bored-sites-for-when-youre-bored/all-comments/ I looked through my log files for that IP address and discovered the following: 85.177.33.196 - - [03/Jul/2008:06:40:01 +0000] “GET /2005/02/18/10-more-ways- ...

I'm receiveing tons of "Mail Delivery Failure" emails lately, like hundreds a day. Today I opened a few to check what's going on... And basically these emails say a message could not be delivery due to a random error. What intrigued me was that emails from my domain were the alledged sender or were on the reply-to field. Those email accounts not even exist under my domain. And the spam messages were not sent from my server as it's clear in the body of the delivery error email. So the situation is I have a spammer sending out thousands of emails a day impersonating my domain. :( You can see a copy of the emails I'm getting here: http://cl1p.net/delivery_error Why's the spammer doing this? Why the need to impersonate my domain? And how can I stop him? I think I might have a problem with my SPF rules, too loose! How to tighten it? Regards ...

Just a quick vent: lately, a new website, pissedconsumer.com, has been spamming this blog with advertisements for their site. I've been spending too much of my valuable time deleting their spam as they post it. A simple whois shows they're registered anonymously, which is commonly the mark of a less-than-legitimate organization. I tried out their site myself. It's basicly a place to vent your frustration. It's unlikely anybody will read what you have to write. After you've entered your complaint, your given the opportunity to pay a fee and get preferential placement, which I suppose means you get placed at the top of the search results that nobody will ever be searching for anyway. It remains to be seen what else they're up to. Similar review sites have been known to try to blackmail businesses with threats of negative reviews or censorship of positive reviews, or to charge fees to have negative reviews removed, and so on. I'll be watching for further news of them. Meanwhile, if you really want to post a review of a business, positive or negative, then I suggest either ResellerRatings or Yelp , both of which are popular, honest, and well-established web sites. ...
