By Keith Thursby Times staff writer Found on EBay a small piece of L.A. hockey history--a trading card for Terry Sawchuk, Kings goaltender. Sawchuk was the first player picked by the Kings in the expansion draft and should have been their star attraction. Sawchuk came to the Kings as a four-time winner of the Vezina Trophy, given to the league's top goalie. But he spent only one season in Los Angeles, traded just before the start of the 1968-69 season for Detroit center Jimmy Peters. According to The Times' Chuck Garrity, the Kings apparently preferred goalie Gerry Dejardins, who played... ...

Hands down, my best celebrity sighting at New York Fashion Week was Fab favorite Diane Kruger. I don't know what it is about her. No, actually, I do. She's demure and ladylike, but also experimental and youthful. This is how I like to describe my own personal style. And, just when you think you've nailed down her look, she wears something totally fresh and unexpected. She only attended the Tommy Hilfiger show — in mad plaid — and I had direct view of her. If you asked me to describe the Spring Hilfiger collection, you'd get a hazy explanation, because my eyes were struggling to stay on her while taking in the sporty, elegant clothes; it's usually the other way around. While Diane was whisked away too soon for me to catch her, I pulled a fast one and took her seat holder as a Fashion Week Souvenir. Care to join the Fab fan club? ...

We've talked at length about the difference between infinite goods and scarce goods in various areas, and how you should spread the infinite ideas to make the scarce goods more valuable, but here's a great quote that puts that in perspective when it comes to books. Mathew Ingram points us to an interview with entrepreneur and author Seth Godin , where he notes: "Books are souvenirs that hold ideas. Ideas are free. If no one knows about your idea, you fail. If your idea doesn't spread, you fail. If your idea spreads but no one wants to own the Souvenir edition, you fail." That's a beautifully succinct way of explaining the entire concept, though I think that the last bit (about getting people to own the Souvenir edition) may be changing as well -- and other business models will start to show up. We stretched the three-day weekend to four-and-a-half, taking a mini-vacation to Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Mike, the Loved One, refused to make what he considers the most boring round-trip drive in America; he flew out and met me so he only had to make the car trip on the return leg of the journey. On the way out, I stopped to get a Coke and walk around at a roadside tourist stop called Clines Corners, about an hour east of Albuquerque. Clines Corners is like Stuckey's on steroids, a throwback to the days when the promise of clean restrooms and cheap hot dogs made road-weary travelers slam on the brakes. Its advent is heralded along Interstate 40 (the modern incarnation of the old Route 66) by serial billboards for 100 miles in either direction. Inside is the most astonishing amalgam of tourist-trade retail dreck in the Western Hemisphere. Once inside, you can peruse room after room filled floor-to-ceiling with Souvenir ashtrays, fake Indian blankets, plastic popguns, postcards of fat ladies riding overburdened donkeys, shot glasses from each of the 50 states, rubber Bowie knives, gator heads, t-shirts, keychains, framed pictures of John Wayne, air fresheners with Jesus on them. You can buy 10 flavors of fudge, a set of enameled tin dinnerware, beaded moccasins, fireworks, miniature collectible spoons, comical placards to hang in your guest bathroom, candle holders and crucifixes. I bought a bottle opener with the familiar "Route ...

Three tourists from Xinjiang province returned from their trip to Kyrgyzstan with a lump of depleted uranium . They had bought the radioactive material as a Souvenir at a local flea market. This kind of waste can be found at disposal sites left from Soviet-era uranium mining in Kyrgyzstan. After returning to China, they took the uranium to an expert at Tsinghua university to have it identified. The university staff called the police when they realized what it was, however, charges will not be pressed as a the men obviously didn't know what they had bought. ...

My husband drinks an insane amount of soda when we're at DL/DCA and I was wondering if either park sells refillable mugs (ie, pay $12 for the mug and receive free refills for the length of your stay, similar to WDW). I have a vague memory of this from about 10 year back, but am not sure. Also, I've done a search and am coming up with some hits on 'Souvenir sippers', but it's not clear whether these are refillable or not. Thanks ...
