The Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh , dominated by critics of the liberal direction of their denomination nationally, today voted to leave the U.S. Episcopal Church and to become a part of the Anglican Province of the Southern Cone, which includes the nations of South America from Peru south. The leadership of the Pittsburgh Diocese had many criticisms of the national church, but the precipitating event for the split was the denomination's approval of the election of a gay priest, the Rev. V. Gene Robinson, to be bishop of New Hampshire. A statement from the Rev. Peter Frank, director of communications for the diocese: “We deeply value our shared heritage and years of friendship with those still within that denomination, but this diocese could not in good conscience continue down the road away from mainstream Christianity that the leadership of The Episcopal Church is so determined to follow.'' The decision will likely lead to a battle for control of the church buildings. The presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, Katharine Jefferts Schori, told the Episcopal News Service that she plans to re-establish an Episcopal diocese in Pittsburgh: "We will work with remaining Episcopalians in Pittsburgh to provide support as they reorganize the Diocese and call a bishop to provide episcopal ministry. The people of The Episcopal Church hold all concerned in our prayers -- for healing and comfort in time of distress, and for discernment as they ...

The city of Galesburg is taking the emerald ash borer seriously. So seriously, in fact, that the city’s Public Works Department developed a community readiness plan in January of this year. Now, some experts are asking if a product made by Bayer could help control the EAB. The state is attempting to do its part through the use of traps to help state and federal officials find what the Illinois Department of Agriculture calls “a cunningly deceptive creature,” the emerald ash borer. In April, the IDA put up purple traps that look like box kites in trees in a 100-mile band on the outskirts of what was then the southernmost infested site in the state, Peru. The 100-mile wide arc included 49 counties in central and northwestern Illinois. About 2,700 of the traps were placed in those areas, with another 750 in the Chicagoland area and 250 in various high-risk areas of Southern Illinois, such as tree nurseries and campgrounds. Kari Houle of the University of Illinois Extension-Knox County said the emerald ash borers, first discovered in this country in Michigan in 2002, “should not be here.” She said the bright, metallic green, one-half-inch-long emerald ash borer can only fly about one-half mile a year. “It’s gotten transported by people,” she said. The emerald ash borer apparently arrived in Michigan through infected wood pallets and has been transported to other states by everything from infested firewood to emerald ash borer that hav ...

Here are some of the latest bankruptcy stories our reporters have been covering Thursday morning on TheDeal.com. For more check out the bankruptcy channel on TheDeal.com or visit Bankruptcy Insider . Asarco ruling: Appeal likely While a federal judge in Texas has ruled that Asarco LLC's parent, Grupo Mexico SAB de CV, committed fraud in the $785 million prepetition sale of its unit's most prized asset, both sides seem resigned to the court fight continuing over that issue as well as the monetary value of damages. The judge also agreed that Grupo Mexico transferred the debtor's 54.2% stake in Southern Peru Copper Co. to a second affiliate, American Mining Corp., or AMC, and that directly led to the copper miner's Chapter 11 filing on Aug. 9, 2005. Asarco and its parent have until Sept. 15 to file additional briefs on the issue of damages. - Terry Brennan Boscov's wins final DIP approval Boscov's Inc. has been granted full access to a $250 million debtor-in-possession loan that it will use to fashion a restructuring strategy or possibly a sale. The debtor must file a plan that pays off the DIP by Oct. 22 to avoid a default. - Ben Fidler CCI of West Palm closes sale CCI of West Palm Inc., which operates 17 TGI Friday's restaurants in Florida and New York, has closed the sale of its assets, likely leading to a liquidation plan for the estate of the TGI Fridays Inc. Created in the stunning Vilcanota Range of the Southern Andes of Peru, 'Tinkuy' brings us to a world in the process of emerging from the clouds. Atop craggy passes and in valleys still free from roads, alpacas outnumber people, condors carry good fortune on enormous wings, and families subsist on potatoes they collectively coax from vertical mountain slopes. Within this landscape is the Community of Q'eros, comprised of five indigenous communities balanced on the edge of the sierra and the fertile jungle below. From their perch at 14,000 feet, the Q'eros believe that they are the last existing population directly descended from the Incas, attributing their survival of the Spanish Conquest to protection provided by their sacred mountains, the Apus. When the Q'eros speak of the outside invasions today, however, they note that they are losing the power to call upon the Apus as their ancestors did. Instead, young Q'eros are looking to each other to advocate for their community and stop the bulldozers, the miners, and the helicopters full of bioprospectors. They seek protection from these modern invasions by increasing community organization and engaging with outside institutions through petitions and meetings. The arrival of the video camera, and eventually the knowledge to be able to use it independently, has opened broad avenues of access for their activism. Through online distribution, they hope that an international reach will ma ...
