Every Marine has a story to tell about the life's journey that took them to the Anbar province of Iraq. Lance Cpl. Migdad H. Mustafa's route was more circuitous than most. He was born in Sudan, and his family moved to Yemen, and then were admitted to the U.S. as political refugees when Mustafa was 14. The family settled in South Dakota, home to numerous Sudanese. "I was a little crazy growing up, so I decided to put that craziness to use," Mustafa said in a telephone interview. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and went to boot camp in San Diego. Now he's deployed at Al Asad with the Camp Pendleton-based 5th Regional Combat Team. His official duties are as a combat engineer — building things, blowing up things — and as a driver for the MRAP, the mine-resistant vehicle credited for saving U.S. lives. But he has another skill that has proved invaluable: he speaks fluent Arabic, his native language. The language gap continues to plague the U.S. effort throughout Iraq. "The Marines only know a little Arabic like 'stop or I'll shoot,' " said Mustafa, now 21. "Most Iraqis only know 'mister, mister' so it helps everyone for me to be able to explain things." And since he is not working as an official interpreter, he can also hear what the Iraqis are saying when they think none of the Americans know their language. Like the other day when he overheard two Iraqi soldiers arguing about whether to stop a suspicious truck. The Iraqi officer ref ...

Sept. 05, 2008 - What have you done since you became the Minister of Legal Affairs and Constitutional Development? If you are asking me as to what I did since the time I became a minister, I have done so many things. Can you highlight a few of them? Before the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) I was one of the leading participants in the negotiation of the CPA. Number two, after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement I became one of the leading members of the National Constitutional Review Commission. The National Constitutional Review Commission drafted the Interim National Constitution and there I played a major role in it. Then after the passing of the Interim National Constitution, I also became the chairperson of the Southern Sudan Interim Constitution, and there, also, we managed to prepare the Southern Sudan Interim Constitution. It was passed by the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly. We took it to Khartoum for conformity and it was confirmed to be in conformity with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. That is also another contribution. Continue reading » ...

Sept 16, 2008 - ( NSV ) - South African President Thabo Mbeki arrived in Sudan on Monday to push for deferring of Bashir's ICC indictment and for an end to the Darfur crisis, just after having successfully helped end the Zimbabwe's crisis. Mbeki will soon join the Who’s Who among African heads of states for his stellar performance as the man who has been carrying the torch of the historic African National Congress (ANC) party since the legendary Nelson Mandela. Mr. Mbeki is serving his last year of his two-term presidency, with elections set for 2009. But even before that time comes to a close; even before all newspapers take notice of him as the man who just reconciled the parties into sharing power in Zimbabwe; and even before he finishes what he comes to do in Sudan---pushing for deferring of the ICC indictment against Bashir and to solve Darfur issue - Mr. Mbeki is being urged by many in his own party to resign after Friday high court’s ruling.
