The venerable fighting franchise comes to the PS3. It should be noted upfront that I am both a big fan of 3D fighting games and an unrepentant, inveterate button-masher. When I come at an opponent in a fighting game I will hit the same button over and over and over again until the opponent shows me that they can block it, at which point I become a little flummoxed and need some time to regroup. ... ... In general, I hate fighting games. I'm traditionally very bad at them, especially the 2D kind. God, get me behind the controller of a King of Fighters or Street Fighter game and you will see some first-class button mashing. As I struggle to land a single hit, my opponents often tease and jest, keeping just a few pixels from my position, and then let loose with some punishing 118-hit combo which basically ends the round. What about Tekken? That's a 3D fighter that actually feels like a different animal, but again, my performance makes that of a blind chimpanzee seem fairly hardcore. No, dear readers, SoulCalibur has been my one and only fighting game, from the Dreamcast onward. It is the only fighter, 3D or otherwise, I feel somewhat good at. Japanese players of SoulCalibur IV are about to get their easy "Soul Crushes" taken away from them, courtesy of a patch from Bandai Namco. Siliconera reports that the Japan-only update rebalances the game, with some of the changes including making it harder to achieve a "Soul Crush" -- a vulnerable state that leaves a character practically defenseless -- and a fix for Ivy's infinite combo . When we first heard of this title, we immediately conjured up memories of SoulCalibur Legends (read the preview that got us blacklisted by Namco Bandai here ). Somehow, Konami is daring to tread the same path by re-imagining the Castlevania franchise as a waggle-filled fighting game with subpar (even for Wii) graphics and shallow gameplay. We'd feel sorry for poor ol' Castlevania for being treated this way -- but we've been through this before . At the very least, Judgment is much more competent and fun than SoulCalibur Legends . Graphically speaking, Judgment is rather unattractive, featuring awkward character models that certainly don't belong in the Castlevania universe. Textures are low-res, environments are uninspired and character models are poorly constructed with flat textures and low poly counts. Sadly, it doesn't match the visual fidelity of the 3D Castlevania titles on the PS2. Thankfully, the gameplay in Judgment isn't as shallow as you may expect. Yes, you can swing your Wiimote every which way, but you won't be able to win with blind waggling. Perhaps it's because Judgment is being touted as a fighting game and not an adventure game, but the fighting engine does feature a bit more depth than the one found in SoulCalibur Legends . Dress up time! Japan is getting more discerning SoulCalibur IV DLC. Previously, the country got maid outfits, and now that Namco Bandai is releasing another ¥300 (US$2.77) DLC bundle called "Customize Parts", players can outfit their fighters in various types of schoolgirl outfits.
