Interestingly, the evidence shows that most people with sinus infections do not need antbiotics, even if symptoms with 7 to 10 days of symptoms. Studies show that for every 15 people who are actually treated with antibiotics, only 1 actually benefits. The other 14 would have gotten better without them. Many of the 14 however will [...] ...

Amid all the hoopla that is the Beijing Summer Olympics, it’s understandable that some things are lost in the wake of feats such as acquiring eight gold medals. Take, for instance, the live-from-the-Beijing Olympics blog being written by Dr. Scott Rodeo (pronounced row-dee-oh, not the fancy row-day-oh), an orthopedic surgeon on the medical team treating U.S. Olympic athletes. He may not have the cachet of Oprah-approved Dr. Mehmet Oz, but Rodeo has great creds — he’s the co-chief of the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, associate team physician for the New York Giants, and a former competitive swimmer. He’s done the Olympics gig before as the U.S. Olympic team’s physician at the Athens Games in 2004. The hospital’s public relations director suggested he blog via his Blackberry about his experiences as one of several medical personnel at the event, and so he has, starting with the swim team’s training camp in Singapore. Which is great, except the posts are … less than spine-tingling. "I have continued to treat both gastrointestinal illness as well as sinusitis, upper respiratory conditions, coughs, and Sore Throats," he writes. "We have also had a few minor injuries in swimmers (finger, elbow) which occurred from a forceful finish." All righty then. Frankly, we feel for Rodeo, who must be caught between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, he certainly has no desire to see nasty ...

Doctors to be banned from dishing out antibiotics for Sore Throats and colds By Daniel Martin Last updated at 2:35 AM on 23rd July 2008 Doctors will be told not to hand out antibiotics for coughs, Sore Throats and colds under guidelines to be unveiled today. GPs have been accused of wasting more than £100million on the drugs every year for patients with respiratory tract infections. Rationing watchdog the National Institute for Clinical Excellence said today that the vast majority of cases would clear up on their own. Adults should simply 'take a rest' while children should be offered 'love... ...

Millions of children going back to school this week will be exposed to germs they’re not yet resistant to. Those starting school for the first time are especially prone to picking up colds and tummy upsets that spread quickly in the close confines of the classroom. Here’s the lowdown on how to protect your child from some of the most common back-to-school health problems. The problem: COLDS & Sore Throats Adults suffer from an average of two to four colds a year but school children can catch eight or more because their immune systems are still developing. Treat it : There’s no cure so just get them to rest and treat individual symptoms. Clear stuffy noses with inhalations of mentholated capsules or jojoba oil. If your child has a raised temperature, give them junior paracetamol – ask a pharmacist to recommend a product suitable for their age group. And make sure they stay hydrated with plenty of fluids such as water, fruit juice and soup. Soothe Sore Throats with lozenges but never exceed the recommended dose as many contain antiseptics which, in high doses, can encourage bacterial growth. Prevent it : If there’s a cold bug going around, the virus is passed on largely by touch. After a child with cold germs on his hands touches a desk or doorknob, other children touching the same place will then catch the infection when they wipe their eyes, nose or mouth. If you get children into the habit of washing their hands, especially after using ...

My version of Pandan Leaf Fried Chicken Good evening, dear friends For quite some time, I have been avoiding cooking fried foods because the weather is really hot these few months, and eating fried foods in this kind of weather will surely cause heatiness (Sore Throats, headaches, heaty cold/coughs, fever) in our body. Welcome back to our occasional feature on what's happening in the exciting world of the Yahoo! Directory . Even though it's been a while since we've updated you, don't think our work has stopped: There's always new stuff to be added. For example, in less than two weeks, we'll mark the start of the Beijing Olympics . Folks from all over the world are preparing for their visits, so we've expanded our categories on Beijing hotels , tourism , and restaurants , to provide even the fussiest traveler with information on where to go and what to see. Of course, there are other aspects to the Games that we all find fascinating, and so we've boosted our information on such performance-enhancing drugs as Atenolol , GHB , and Rohypnol . And we're not sure if this relates to the sometimes-questionable air in the capital, but we've added sites about treatment of persistent coughs , pneumonia , and Sore Throats (not to mention the traveler's traditional bane: diarrhea ). But it's not all athletics and pollution here. When you wanted good information on Hurricanes Bertha and Dolly , we went out and found it (and will continue to do so throughout the storm season). And when the good people at the Television Academy announced the Emmy Award nominations, and we added information about all the nominated shows and actors . There's always room in the Directory for stuff that's oddball or off-center, so say hello to Live Action Role Playing Games and (our pers ...

Diarrheal Disease: As predicted, my colleagues and I have noticed a significant increase in number of kids being brought for treatment of diarrheal diseases in the past few weeks. While the majority of them have been demonstrated to be of viral origin by stool tests, some of them have been found to be of bacterial aetiology. Both forms of diarrhea are spread via contaminated food and drinks. Improved personal and food hygiene at all times, especially at times like these are an important public health measure to prevent epidemics. Rehydration using ORS and other rehydrating oral fluids is the recommended early home management in affected kids. Respiratory Tract Infections: A flu-like illness is being seen in increasing number among children of all ages. Most affected kids have severe cough, runny nose and sometimes fever. A significant proportion of them have altered voice and Sore Throats. A few of them have been noted to have oral ulcers much like those of Hand Foot and Mouth Disease. Most affected kids recover with symptomatic treatment while a few, but a significant number, have required hospital care for Lower Respiratory Tract Infections. It is my opinion, based on the investigation reports from cases that I have thus far managed, that the illness is of viral aetiology (possibly an enterovirus being the agent). The few cases that have required more intensive treatment are those that had secondary bacterial infections and the very ...

It seems a lot of people wound up catching something really nasty while at PAX. I keep hearing stories from people suffering from Sore Throats , sinus problems and headaches . I got a bit of it, but my incredibly masculine immune system is bolstered by the constant flow of tar and carcinogens I ingest. Viruses are terrified of me. If you've come down with the sickness, click a few of these and call me in the morning. Conversely, if you're listening to "Down with the Sickness," I'm sorry.
