DALLAS — Texas junior quarterback Colt McCoy suffered “Sore legs” after a physical game against Colorado last week and wore a protective boot on one of his feet on the airplane ride home from Boulder. A school source said McCoy was doing fine, however, hadn’t missed a single minute of practice all week and would be ready to go against Oklahoma in Saturday’s 11 a.m. game. The protective boot was more precautionary than anything else for McCoy, who was sacked a season-high four times by the Buffaloes. He also ran 11 times for 39 yards in the 38-14 Texas win. McCoy’s health is critical for the Longhorns because he has been remarkable this season as a 79 percent passer who has thrown 16 touchdown passes with only three interceptions but also because Texas has unproven backups in John Chiles and Sherrod Harris. In addition, Texas also has relied heavily on McCoy’s running abilities as well. He’s the leading rusher on the team, but the Longhorn coaches might be reluctant to use him too much as a runner because it would put him at risk against an aggressive OU defense. ...

I had a few days off from work this wee and for the first time probably this year, I actually did no Clarion-Ledger work for the first three, thus, no blogs for a few days. It paid off and I got a lot done...visiting relatives in Slidell, fishing the Louisiana marshes with Sonny Schindler and my son Danaher, and sighting-in rifles...that's where the Sore shoulder comes in. I had two 45-70's, my buddy Chuck had a 45-70, a .270 and 7mm Weatherby Magnum and my friend Stephen had a .300 Win. Short Magnum. Chuck was unable to do a lot of shooting due to a shoulder injury so Stephen and I took over. That worked out pretty well. We got a couple sighted-in. Then Stephen made some excuse about needing to leave to pick up his kids from school. (OK, maybe he was telling the truth) That left me with three rifles to go, a 45-70 Gov't. with hot loads (300 gr. XTP over 50.2 grains of RL-7), a 7mm Weatherby Mag. and the .270 Winchester. When we finally got to the .270, it felt like a cap gun compared to the punishment of the 45-70's and the magnums. So needless to say, I'm pretty Sore. But, the upside is that we're all ready to hunt. We'll put in a few more days of practice and fine tuning before those two head out West for elk in a few weeks, but I'm feeling confident in the guns. Check back tomorrow and I'll let you know how the trip with Capt. Sonny went...it was a blast! ...
