Filed under: Handhelds Sony's plan to launch an updated Reader today wasn't exactly a secret , but there are still some surprises to the new PRS-700 -- particularly the new six-inch touchscreen E-Ink display. Page turning is now accomplished by a swipe motion with faster refreshes, and there's a stylus and on-screen keyboard for searching and note-taking -- plus an LED reading light (not a backlight) for reading in the dark. Apart from that, it's basically the same deal as the PRS-505 -- internal storage for about 350 ebooks with SD and MS-Duo expansion and a 7500 page-turn battery life round out the package, as well as an updated online store. Of course, there's no Kindle -killing integrated wireless for the $400 price tag, but it'll be interesting to see how they stack up when the PRS-700 hits shelves next month. Sony announces their latest e-book Reader, model PRS-700. As compared to the preceding PRS-505, Sony’s made the PRS-700 a touch screen, thus eliminating the column of 10 buttons along the right side of the screen. Price goes up to about $400, making the PRS-700 $100 more expensive than the 505, but then you get touch-based page [...] ...

Sony tonight fulfilled expectations with the launch of a new, high-end Reader. The PRS-700 is one of the first and few devices to mix the use of an e-ink display with a touchscreen interface and is said to make interacting with books more natural; users make swiping gestures with their fingers to turn pages and use a stylus to select text, run a search or make notes with an on-screen keyboard. Until now digital readers have been a great idea whose time hasn’t quite come. The good news: every new model gets better, and Sony’s latest Reader, the PRS-700 is the company's best yet. It has the dimensions of a slim paperback book and weighs a very portable 10 ounces. Better still, it has a touchscreen, letting you flip pages with the slide of a finger. The new model also adds LED reading lights on the sides of the 6-inch screen, making it easy to read in a darkened airplane cabin. Of course, that's going to suck your battery faster, draining it after just 8 hours (or 4 on the high setting). The onboard memory can store about 350 books, and there are card slots for SD and Memory Stick Duo cards. With the included eBook Library 2.5 PC software you can transfer pdf documents and even music files to the Reader. Down the road there are plans for a wireless application (à la Amazon's Kindle ) to get news on the go and generally expand the 700’s functionality. Right now it's strictly black-and-white, though. When pressed on when we could expect a color Reader, Sony reps would only say it's still "years" away. But the mono-colored PRS-700 will be available in November for $300. Via Sony ...

You know how you love to highlight you favourite novels, but then weep when you remember that you can't rub it off again? Well, Sony's new Reader (or Digital Book as they like to call it), the PRS-700, has added touch sensitivity to the range, so on and off highlighting will be a cinch! Bonus! The six-inch screen might still be black and white (don't expect any changes there for a while) but packs a virtual keyboard and the ability to search for words and phrases as well. Night vision It also comes with a world's first for an e-book: a backlight for low-visibility reading. Now that's something no book has ever managed. Obviously. Space for around 350 books is included, and expansion is available through Memory Stick or SD memory cards. Get your hands on this beauty in November, and it even looks as if Sony is keeping the price very much the same as the previous model, the PRS-505, at a sprightly £200 (or near enough). ...

While portable eBook readers haven’t exactly taken the world by storm, there is a demand for them and a growing market. Sony just announced their latest e-ink Reader, the Reader PRS-700 this evening and it’s quite pricey. The Reader does have a touchscreen, which is a definite change from the old model. This makes it so the display is roomier, which allows for note taking, highlighting and more. You can also use a stylus, which is convenient. The navigation buttons have been removed as well. What’s good about this is the screen can afford to be larger now, making reading on the device much more like reading an actual book. And though usability has gotten better, this device lacks EVDO and other wireless functionality which the Amazon Kindle has and costs the same. You can get the Sony Reader PRS-700 for $400 starting in November.
