A final salute — rich with patriotism and full of emotion — was issued Saturday to Staff Sgt. Kristopher Rodgers as St. Joseph and LaGrange counties said goodbye to a fallen hero. The 29-year-old Burr Oak man, a native of Howe, Ind., was killed Aug. 16 in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley, the result of a roadside bomb. Based on the hundreds of people who gathered along the route of his funeral procession, Rodgers’ sacrifice was aptly and wholeheartedly acknowledged. “Being a part of this event is a way for us to say ‘Thank you and God bless you,’” said Mike Dunlap, a St. Joseph County Commissioner who was one of about 250 motorcycle riders — members of the Patriotic Guard Riders — preceding the hearse carrying Rodgers and the subsequent vehicles that made up a procession that took about 20 minutes to pass. The funeral motorcade started from Sturgis Wesleyan Church and concluded at Lakeland High School in LaGrange, Ind. Once at Lakeland High School’s football field, a ceremony featuring full military honors was conducted. Rodgers was an alumnus of Lakeland High School and the outdoor venue provided adequate accommodations for the several hundred people who gathered to pay their final respects.
