The state of Hawaii has become the first in North America to require Solar Water Heaters in new homes. The bill, signed into law by Republican Governor Linda Lingle this week, prohibits issuing building permits for single-family homes that do not have Solar Water Heaters. All new homes will be required to have the energy-saving systems installed starting in 2010. Exceptions will be made for houses in heavily forested areas. But the move to force Solar heating is a big step for a state that relies heavily on imported fossil fuels for 90% of its supply. Conventional Water Heaters are typically the largest electricity consumer in the average household, gobbling up nearly 40% of consumption. The measure was first introduced five years ago when a barrel of oil cost just $40. Since then, the price has more than tripled. Solar Water Heaters can be complex systems or simple cheap models. Here’s how you make one for $5. The government also has a good site on how Solar Water Heaters work. Not surprisingly, builders and developers were against the bill, saying it would add too much to the cost of new home constructions. But surprisingly, another opponent was the Hawaii Solar Energy Association. Last April, in a story in the Star Bulletin , Ron Richmond, with the association, said the new legislation would cost home-buyers about $2,100 more to have the Solar Water Heaters installed. The average Solar Water heater, according to the article, currentl ...

Hoping to save on our energy bills, we're considering installing a Solar Water heater at our home. Does the federal government offer any tax breaks for these systems? Given the high upfront expense of Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and Solar Water Heaters, it's no wonder you're interested in financial incentives to alleviate some of the cost. Federal tax credits for PV systems and Solar Water Heaters do exist, though you'll need to move quickly because they expire this December 31. Advocates of Solar energy fear the end of the tax credits will discourage adoption of these promising technologies. "If the federal Solar credits expire as planned, it will definitely put a huge damper on the market, and we'll see a large drop in installations," says Larry Sherwood, a consultant to the Interstate Renewable Energy Council, a nonprofit that promotes renewable energy. Federal tax credits for Solar power have helped double the number of commercial and residential installations of PV and Solar-Water-heater systems since taking effect in 2006, according to the new "U.S. Solar Market Trends" report by Sherwood. Rising energy prices and state incentives have also played a role in spurring the market, particularly in states where those incentives have the biggest payoff. California, with the largest state incentive program for PV systems, dominates the market with 69 percent of all installations. Similarly, Hawaii, with its generous incentives, acco ...

Australians are certainly adopting environmental responsibility with vigour. A greener suburbia has manifested itself in many ways, the presence of the ubiquitous recycling bins, Water tanks and Solar panels. The problem is that much of this green infrastructure is just plain ugly and inefficient. Governments love a bit of green window dressing. For instance, the federal government is offering rebates of up to $8,000 to incent households to install Solar panels. A recent report commissioned by the federal government, however, suggests that some of these rebates and incentives are highly inefficient. In other words, when you combine the cost to the tax payer of the rebate and emmissions from the manufacture of the panels the benefits are simply not there. So while Solar panels might give you a lovely warm inner glow knowing that you are helping the environment, in reality you are probably not making much of a difference and making your roof less attractive in the process. Lets face it - there are few things more unsightly on a suburban house than those rusty old Solar hot Water Heaters. Environmental issues are mainstream and politicians are desperate to win green votes. Take Sydney Lord mayor candidate Dr Meredith Burgmann. Dr Burgmann suggests that there should be a 2 per cent levy to offset the green house gases produced by new developments. As if we didn't have enough taxes levied at the construction industry . There is already infr ...

Hi all, A first version of ThetaNoon is available at: http://thetanoon.appspot.com/ ThetaNoon is a service that allows Solar systems (Solar panels, Water Heaters etc.) owners track their systems output. It is also valuable for anyone looking to buy Solar systems and wants to learn how this systems work, what is their output, etc, from current Solar system users. I tried to give the service more of an application feel, rather than a website. The current functionality is pretty basic, there is no update mode yet, but as more systems are added, it will become very useful. I used GWT + EXT to develop the UI part, and the data services (system calculated output, chart data etc.) is run on Googles app engine. The GWT front-end calls GAE web-services that provides the data foundations. Any input would be highly appreciated - I am sure you will have a lot to suggest. Thanks, Yossi Topic Replies: 1 ...

What place does legislation have in the greening of our homes? That was the question running through our minds when we read a bit of news over at the Huffington Post . According to HuffPo, Hawaii is now requiring that all new homes be outfitted with Solar hot Water Heaters. Obviously, we love Solar hot Water Heaters (according to the article, the Heaters should save homeowners at least $50 a month on electric bills). However, some residents are a bit upset. Houses in Hawaii are expensive and Solar hot Water Heaters cost considerably more that gas or electric versions. So, what do you think? Is legislating this sort of thing the only way to effect change? Or is it an unfair burden on those who already struggle to afford housing prices on the island? Via HuffingtonPost.com ...

Note: Lakeland has begun searching for private investment partnerships in order to expand the program. Lakeland Electric, a municipal utility in Florida, is the nation's first utility to offer Solar-heated domestic hot Water on a "pay-for-energy" basis. The utility owns and maintains the Solar Water Heaters they install on participating customers' homes and bills them only for hot Water delivered to the faucet. The utility installs revenue-grade energy meters to measure the thermal output of the Solar Water heating systems. These meters internally convert the thermal energy (Btus) to an electricity equivalent (kWh) for billing purposes. Whereas hundreds of utilities across the U.S. offer their customers a green power option for a premium, the Lakeland program offers a customer-sited Solar energy option that reduces the program participant's overall energy costs. The program serves as an incentive to residential customers to utilize Solar energy by: eliminating up-front equipment expenditures and maintenance costs; locking in a portion of the customer's energy costs at ~ 8¢/kWh (the Solar energy rate) as compared to Lakeland's current electric rate of ~ 13¢/kWh; that is, a portion of their energy costs are exempt from fuel charge increases; reducing standby losses when the Water heater is not in use (typically ~ 15% of the energy consumption of a conventional hot Water heater), thereby further reducing energy costs; reducing the environ ...

Arlington, VA's GridPoint has raised a monster $120M in fifth-round funding. Gridpoint has now raised around $220M in total VC funding. It used some of the funds to buy V2Green, a Seattle-based developer of plug-in electric vehicle grid integration technology. No financial terms of the acquisition were disclosed. GridPoint applies IT to the electric grid to provide utilities with an intelligent network of distributed energy resources that controls load, stores energy and produces power. Gridpoint offers utilities a single interface, located in a utility’s control room, for managing a variety of distributed energy assets including plug-in electric vehicles, Solar panels, wind turbines, advanced storage technologies and household devices such as thermostats, electric Water Heaters, pool pumps, etc. That's a lot to bite off for a startup. The startup is a bit scary to us for this reason. It reminds us of startups who peaked during the dotcom bubble that raised warchests with plans to own whole sections of the Internet economy. We like some of the ideas here and think that GridPoint will benefit from civic efforts to go green. They have won part of a deal with the city of Boulder, CO. But it still looks like a... ...

Guahan Alternative Energy, along with Kindo Electric, has partnered up to offer up eco-friendly alternatives for power generation.  The former is a locally owned supplier of Solar panels and Solar Water Heaters along with wind and micro-hydroelectric generators. "My power was averaging around $135 a month, and then it fell to $70" - Pat Quintanilla, Guahan Alternative Energy Pat Quintanilla says he started the company in response to rising fuel and power costs, telling KUAM News, "We're going to be hooked up to the Guam Power Authority no matter what, but with harnessing Solar, wind or hydroelectric, we can harness that energy to reduce our power using on the grid configuration or off the grid." To help get his product into local homes and businesses, Quintanilla has enlisted the help of Kindo Electric to install the energy efficient products.  In fact, in his own home he's already installed a wind generator and is impressed by the savings.  "I got a 500-watt wind generator and my power was averaging around $135 a month, and then it fell to $70," he recalled. Now yes, Solar, wind and micro hydroelectric systems can be pretty pricey, but Quintanilla says over time customers will recoup that money due to a lower monthly power bill.   Kindo Electric president Ken Leon Guerrero agrees with that concept - in fact, at his business' location in Agat, he's trying to get off the power grid entirely.  "We've got a 2-kilowatt wind generator ...
