The concept of making a Solar Dish isn’t at all new. I even seen it at Mythbusters. Basically the design was a huge parabola composed of an array of mirrors focused on a single point. It is basically the same concept as focusing a magnifying glass to a certain point to ignite a match or [...] ...

The Solar industry is booming. With waves of investment and grants, the Solar power industry is for the first time becoming a serious business. New power plants will soon be pumping power out to consumers, while other firms market to sell panels directly to the consumer, providing them with a more direct means of experiencing Solar energy. ...

Today much of the tech world is sad that the iPhone 3G's launch is going so miserably. But I'm sad that it's my last day at Salon. I've accepted a job at Slate, where, starting next week, I'll be writing a twice-weekly technology column. Machinist will go on a break for a week, after which a guest blogger will bring you the latest tech Dish. I joined Salon in 2002, and since then I've written about, among other things, Smart Cars, robotic vacuum cleaners, muffin toasters, voting machines, architecture and 9/11, Tower Seven, Bill Clinton, Terri Schiavo, Florida's elections, "The Wisdom of Crowds," Malcolm Gladwell, Linux, Daniel Levitin, the copyright industries, Lawrence Lessig, The New York Times, Martha Stewart, a mnemonic to remember the Solar System's planets, Google, garlic, stem cells, Comcast, Apple, Speedo, taxes, Social Security, Antonin Scalia, Barack Obama, the robots' plan to take over the Earth, Howard Stern, Stringer Bell, Current TV, campaign finance reform, MoveOn, Howard Dean, Nintendo, Total Information Awareness, Java, Alice Waters, "The West Wing," Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the Washington Post, Judy Miller, and Hurricane Katrina. I'm pretty sure there's no other news outlet on the planet which would have given me such latitude, and I thank everyone here at Salon for that. I also want to thank all the readers who've read my work, not to mention praised me, hounded me, kept me up late at night swearing at the scree ...

In an effort to use renewable energy sources and less polluting products, I’m surprised that I never see barbecues being targeted. Everyone always thinks of cars or big industrial factories as the ones that leave the huge carbon footprint, but no one thinks about grilling. I mean, if you’re burning something, that smoke has to go somewhere. And I’m certain that propane is some sort of pollutant because it smells so funny. It appears that someone has addressed this issue with the Helios, an energy-efficient outdoor cooker. The Dish that you see is not designed to pick up 400 stations, but for collecting Solar energy. The Solar Dish, which is safely pointed away from you while cooking, is designed to heat a coil inside the barbeque and cook food. Of course, what if you want to barbecue at night? Well, if the sun is not out for whatever reason, the user can always rely on electrical power. The Helios has a retractable plug that is stored in the base. Unfortunately, this Helios is just a concept in its present form. Once it gets developed, the days of the Weber are over. Yes, the Helios is the barbecuing wave of the future! Something about this Sun Fold Bike concept really bugs me. Sure, as design concepts go, it's pretty benign — conceived as a green and relatively portable form of commuter transport, it's a fold-up bike that runs on Solar power (you probably could have figured that out from the name). The power is stored in a battery that you can use at night or even to power other gear like an iPod. Nothing wrong there. No, I think it's the vaguely egg-like shape it takes in folded-up form that's creeping me out. That, and the nest-like Dish it rests in, which tracks the sun's movements to maximize power absorption when you're not riding it. Yeah, that's probably it. Cool bike, though, and greener than a Segway . Ecofriend , via The Design Blog ...

Chapter 1 Beginning of the End The darkness in the distance encompassing man has always been his shackles. The darkness of space was once thought to be an impossible thing for man to see. Space, was something only to be observed from the ground. That was true until 23xx A.D. Once man dropped the shackles of his ignorance and of gravity, and made star ships that could leave the Solar system, space became his domain. There was a desire to find life other than what existed on earth. That thirst for other life forms was answered when the robot relics were discovered. The relics were activated and the first encounters with the robotic clans took place a lot of people rejoiced that the discovery. Rejoicing soon ended as it was learned that the robots had insatiable desire for energy resources. Our Solar system seemed to have what they needed. Humanity rose to the occasion and built many battle ships. These ships were grand in scale and capable of going toe to toe with what the robot ships could Dish out, this being true if a group of three were together. Needing clusters of ships to handle one threat evened the odds and caused some battles to be won. But many felt the over war would be lost if something didn’t change soon. Ensign drop us from hyperspace. Where should I bring us about? Point 9 near the other battalions. Scans are showing multiple points of damage to the flag ship Yamato sir. Should we aid them?
