Friendster might not be the first name in Social Networking in the US, but in Asia it’s the dominant player in many countries, with a userbase totaling more than 60 million across the continent. Today, the company is announcing that Facebook Applications can now be easily ported into Friendster – who already has its own developer platform and also supports OpenSocial. This could be attractive to Facebook developers for a number of reasons, especially considering the negative impact that the site’s recent re-design is having on usage for some Applications. For the most part, Friendster’s audience has little overlap with that of Facebook – only 22% according to the companies – meaning there are about 45 million potential new users for developers to target. Further, for the moment the Friendster developer community is far less competitive than that of Facebook – its directory features only about 600 Applications as opposed to the tens of thousands that have already been built for Facebook. Thus, the challenge for developers who port their Applications over to Friendster is not necessarily the competition – though Slide, RockYou, and other big widget makers own many of the most popular apps – but making them attractive to a largely different audience. IBM is getting in the cloud. After a string of announcements over the past few weeks from Citrix, Red Hat, VMware, Cisco and Hewlett-Packard, Big Blue is launching an initiative to extend its traditional software delivery model toward a mix of on-premise and cloud-computing Applications with new software, services and technical resources for clients and independent software vendors (ISVs). As IBM sees it, businesses face a unique set of challenges as they look to grow in a globally integrated economy. The company described a perfect storm of data deluge, a fluid regulatory environment, and widening gaps in IT skills that add more cost pressures to resource-strapped organizations. Part of the answer, IBM says, is cloud computing. "We are moving our clients, the industry, and even IBM itself to have a mixture of data and Applications that live in the data center and in the cloud," said Willy Chiu, vice president of high-performance on-demand solutions at IBM. Developers who have created Applications for Facebook 's platform can now bring them over to Social network Friendster . This means that Friendster supports both Facebook's code and OpenSocial, the standard created by Google for Social-network widgets . "Friendster's support of both the Facebook and OpenSocial platforms is a big win for business and individual developers, as well as for Friendster users," David Jones, vice president of global marketing for Friendster, said in a release. "For the developers that have invested resources in developing and launching a Facebook app, Friendster has now made it very easy for them to 'port' these Applications to Friendster...For Web 2.0 companies that have developed apps using Facebook and OpenSocial APIs, they now have the flexibility to choose between approaches when launching Applications on Friendster." Another Social network, Bebo , now owned by AOL, announced that it would implement support for Facebook's platform late last year. Friendster marketing director Jeff Roberto told CNET News that Friendster entered into a licensing agreement with Facebook, which has since made most of its developer platform open source .
