The Georgetown boys Soccer Team went 1-2 last week, improving their overall record this season to 3-4-2. The Royals began the week falling to Amesbury, 5-3, on Oct. 3. The Royals started the game off strong, after Jimmy Savelyev scored the game’s first goal. The Royals’ momentum was short-lived, as Amesbury connected on back-to-back goals. The Royals tied the game at 2-2 during the closing seconds of the first half, after Mike Smith netted a shot. The locals took a brief lead during the beginning of the first half, thanks to a goal by Kyle McKay. Unfortunately for the Royals, Amesbury regrouped with confidence, and scored the next three goals to put the game away. Andrew Carroll started in net for the Royals and recorded 13 saves. Royals head coach Ron Comeau said the Royals went into the game with a more offensive-minded approach, which had both benefits and drawbacks. “We were trying a different formation in the game,” said Comeau. “We decided to sacrifice our defense for more offense. We ended up scoring three goals, but we let up three goals on the defensive end.” After falling to Amesbury, the Royals bounced back and crushed Ipswich, 5-1, on Oct. 3 during the second annual ALS Challenger Cup, benefiting those who are fighting Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Savelyev led the Royals with two goals. Mike Salvaggio, Ryan Browner, and Tyler Carlson each added one goal. McKay, Josh Ingram, and Jon Bordonaro each had one assist. Carroll got h ...

It was the beginning of a very trying week. Monday, the Acton-Boxborough girls Soccer Team played its first of four games this week, all against some of the best competition it will face during the regular season. The Colonials cleared the first hurdle, defeating Lincoln-Sudbury, 2-0. The next game is against Newton South, the last Team to earn a point off the defending Division 1 state champions when it tied A-B last fall. On Friday, the Colonials play Dual County League Small School leader Bedford. The week concludes on Saturday when La Salle Academy of Providence, R.I. visits Leary Field. La Salle, one of the top teams in Rhode Island, replaces St. John’s College Prep of Washington, D.C. on A-B’s schedule. “That’s a good Team; they’re well-coached,” said A-B coach Ru Sweeney of L-S. “We have some tough ones ahead. Of 10 points, I hope we can get at least eight. These are the games that the kids want to play.” A-B (8-0) scored once in each half, with Ceci Jensen getting through the Warrior defense on a breakaway with 8:41 left in the first half after taking a pass from Hayley Brock. L-S had a called back on an offside call in the final five minutes of the half, allowing the Colonials to hold on to their lead. Brock scored A-B’s second goal with 7:31 left in the game with an assist from Marie Margolius. ... Source: www.rgj.com --- 4 days ago

It was supposed to be a busy, important week for the Lincoln-Sudbury girls Soccer Team. But the rain that created the three-match Warrior work week killed off one of the matches, at Boston Latin on Oct. 1 — and suddenly L-S had some time on its hands. “We had a fun day,” said Warrior senior captain Maryn Carlson of that Wednesday rainout. “We didn’t have a field to play on, so we had a Team building practice. Played some games, got everyone together … I think it was important and good for us.” Friday’s result made her a prophet, as the Warriors made their first trip to Dual County League newcomer Arlington and bowled over the Spy Ponders, 4-1. Midfielder Liz Newman was the big star, notching the hat trick, while Carlson helped out with the assist on the game’s opening goal. “We definitely dominated,” said Carlson. “We were playing some nice possession, with some nice combinations in the attacking third. It was a great game for us.” The win pushed the Warriors to 6-2-0, while staying at 2-2-0 in the DCL Large (Arlington is in the Small Division) heading into Tuesday’s home game against Wayland. The league record was evened up due to a 2-0 loss to unbeaten leaders Acton-Boxboro on Sept. 29. But Carlson said the defeat didn’t get the Warriors down. “We really played them this time,” said Carlson. “We definitely had a lot of opportunities compared to years past. We came out of it feeling like we put up a good game, and are looking forward ... Source: www.thekansan.com --- 3 days ago
After three overtime losses this season, the Newton High School Soccer Team came up with an overtime win, stopping Goddard 2-1 Tuesday at Fischer Field. Garrett Schuck scored the game-winner with 7:07 left in overtime. Guillermo Meza scored for Newton in the second half to tie the game 1-1. Clover Castillo had both assists for the Railers. “It’s nice to be on the other side of an OT game,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “Goddard scored first on a free kick that was played poorly in the back. We came back in the second half with a goal from Guillermo Meza. The assist came from Clover Castillo. We were able to keep Goddard to three shots in the first half. We made our adjustments at half and did not allow another shot on goal. “We had a total of 16 shots on goal, which two of those shots were stopped on the goal line. We had productive performances from all. In OT, Garrett Schuck was able to finish a pass from Clover Castillo with 7:07 left for a golden goal. The coaching staff is very pleased with our play tonight. This win put us at 5-5 and keeps our winning streak going with three in a row.” Newton plays at 6 p.m. Thursday at Winfield.
