Lisa Myers started the girls' Soccer season on North Mecklenburg's junior varsity. On Friday, she played varsity catalyst. Myers, a freshman midfielder, scored the first goal in the Vikings' 3-1 victory against Winston-Salem Mount Tabor in the fourth round of the N.C. 4A playoffs at North Meck. The Vikings got off to a quick start when Myers followed home a mishandled rebound 11 minutes into the match. They'll play the winner of today's Providence-Ardrey Kell game. The momentum for Chili’s very own Little Guy Soccer started on the streets of Italy, with a ball consisting of rags, stuffed into a piece of fabric and sewed in a shape resembling a ball.
As a youth, Ed Merante learned to play Soccer in the streets of Italy. He eventually progressed to play in amateur leagues in Italy and Rochester.
Merante came to the United States in 1956 at the age of 19. Fast forward 10 years. Merante moved to Chili in 1964 to open his own barbershop and began coaching the Jefferson High School Progressive Soccer Team.
In 1968, he turned his attention to Chili where he started a Soccer program for boys in their teens. The four teams, consisting of 78 players, were known as the Westsiders.
“We were four teams, but we couldn’t win a game because the kids were starting so late. They were killing us,” he said, referring to the teams like the Eastsiders, the Baysiders and the Northsiders, which drew players from other parts of the county
That’s when Merante set his mind to teaching Soccer starting at an earlier age. Little Guy Soccer formally began in the early 1970’s. He took out an ad in the Gates-Chili News which resulted in 88 boys registering for the program for a $5 registration fee.
By the second year, the program has doubled to include 240 youth. In the third year, the girls program, juniors (ages 15 to 19) and adults were added to the Chili Soccer Association, which ...
