Despite harsh criticisms, local employers might be jumping on a Web site that helps verify employee immigration status following a presentation by U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert, R-13th District, of Hinsdale. E-Verify is a Web site designed to determine whether an employee can legally work in the country. A presentation last week in Downers Grove informed local employers of the system. The program featured a live demonstration of the site, which is operated by the Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration. After filling out a series of questions on the site, including birth date, green card number or driver’s license number of an employee, E-Verify will deliver a match for employment or lack there of to employers. “There is no question that our immigration service is broken,” said Biggert. Biggert, who delivered the opening and closing remarks, stressed the importance of the site, noting that it will make it harder for illegal immigrants to slip passed employer checks. Mike Rushin, of Snelling Staffing in Lisle, uses E-Verify for new hires and spoke of his approval of the site at the event. “I no longer have to rely on my people to make the call on whether the documents are legal or not,” he said. Valerie Johnson, a recruiter for Advocate Healthcare, has not run into any computer issues with E-Verify in her year and a half of using it and praises what it has done for her employees. “Our staff really likes E-Verify ...

My goal before the end of the season is to spell Cervenak's name right without having to look. I always want to put the "a" before the "e."  Anyway :  The Phillies called up three more players from the minor leagues following today's game, the club announced. Infielders Mike Cervenak and Andy Tracy were recalled and left-hander Les Walrond had his contract purchased, all from triple-A Lehigh Valley. All three had stints with the Phillies earlier in the season. Walrond I guess is the suddenly redundant... third lefty? Fourth? I dunno. Tracy and Cervenak will be extra bench bats. Probably more guys are coming,  perhaps including Actual Prospect Jason Donald  for infield depth and perhaps Chris Snelling for pinch-hittery.  Meanwhile,  here's a cool story  about other Actual Prospects Greg Golson and Lou Marson, who received a low number (3) that suggests he might have a real shot to break camp with the Phils next spring.  ...

The Minot State Football team will try to rebound from a hard fought 27-24 loss to Bemidji State when the team travels to St. Paul this weekend for a first ever matchup with Concordia-St. Paul. The Golden Bears are an NCAA division 2 school who are also looking for their first win after being beaten by Minnesota-Duluth 40-0 last week in their opener. The matchup will be another tough one for the Beavers who will look for improvement as they move closer to conference play. Paul Rudolph, MSU football coach:We wanna play good teams, we wanna put our guys in the most competitive situations we possibly can and they're a quality team same as Bemidji and probably a little bit faster than Bemidji was. They do have some guys that can get after it and run, so we'll have our hands full. They like spreading it around. They got a couple of quarterbacks. Both are strong armed guys that throw it around. Little bit new in the O line but they're very, very skilled at the wide receiver spot. They like throwing it around a lot. Tyson Snelling, senior:Anytime you get a chance to play a team in another division especially higher in division two it's always a great atmosphere in the locker room to be playing someone's that not so much better but they're a good opponent. So it's better for us, it's better for them, it'll be just a great atmosphere for us. Game time on Saturday is at 1 p.m. in St. Paul. ...

Members of a Minnesota Bike riding organization will be paying tribute to the bicycle riders that have been killed on the Minnesota roads this Saturday. The Memorial Ride to Honor Fallen bicyclists will begin at 11 a.m. at Snelling and Summit avenues in St. Paul. With recent studies showing that, while overall road deaths have dropped in Minnesota, death by bicycle riders has grown at an alarming rate. The staff at the Injuryboard has looked at the important issue of bike safety in the past . It's important to reprint the recommendations. General Bicycle Safety Tips -Always wear a helmet. Bicycle helmets can reduce head injuries by 85 percent. -Use hand signals to indicate which direction you want to turn. -Be aware and alert at all busy intersections. Make yourself known to motorists. -Have reflectors or lights when riding at night. -Pass on the left, and be ready to hit the brakes. Keep a good passing distance. -Be aware and leave room for motorists trying to make right-hand turns. -The paths in Boulder have 15 mph speed limits; follow the speed guidelines. -Don't wear headphones when riding, and yield to traffic when entering roadways. The hope is that the memorial will not only honor those that have died, but that it will also remind people of the need for safety. Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Mike Bryant ...
