Filed under: Accessories , Peripherals , Wireless The Eye-F i card is an SD card with a difference -- it has Wi-Fi built into it for easy camera-to-internet transfer of photos. It comes in three different flavors; Eye-Fi Home, Eye-Fi Share, and Eye-Fi Explore. The latter card (US$129) includes free Wi-Fi access at Wayport hotspots, unlimited geotagging using Skyhook Wireless (the same service Apple and Google use for location data on pre-3G iPhones and iPod touch handhelds), and an unlimited WebShare service for sharing photos. Eye-Fi and SmugMug (an online photo sharing site) announced a partnership providing a year of geotagging and hotspot access for SmugMug members using an original Eye-Fi Card or the $US99.99 Eye-Fi Share. SmugMug provides standard (US$39.95 annually), power user (US$59.95 annually) and professional ($149.95 annually) accounts, all of which provide ad-free, backed-up, and secure hosting of your photos. Do you use an Eye-Fi card with your digital camera? If you do, what service do you upload your photos to, and do you use the geotagging capability? Leave us a comment. Eye-Fi , maker of wireless SD cards and online photo sharing site SmugMug have joined forces to provide free geotagging and hotspot access for their users. We reviewed the original Eye-Fi Card (now called Eye-Fi Share) late last year, and enjoyed the convenience of uploading photos from a camera directly to online photo sites and our hard drive without using a cable or card reader. Since then, Eye-Fi has expanded their line with the Eye-Fi Explore, a card that automatically geotags all of your photos and offers the same Wi-Fi capabilities. This partnership means that users of the original Eye-Fi Card will be able to geotag their own photos without upgrading their card. All Eye-Fi users have to do is associate a SmugMug account with their Eye-Fi account, and they'll get a free year of geotagging and photo uploads on-the-go from more than 10,000 Wayport hotspots. SmugMug will geotag your photos and then display them in Google Maps. (You can find examples on maps.SmugMug.com .) This deal is available through the end of the year for both new and existing SmugMug members. Memberships for the site start at $39.95/year. SmugMug also has an geotagging iPhone app called SmugShot that works with the iPhone's built-in camera. ...

Filed under: Gadling Gear Review This piece of news makes me giddy, as it involves 2 things I am pretty passionate about; the SmugMug photo sharing service , and my Eye-Fi wireless photo sharing memory card . If you are like me, and use SmugMug for your photos, and an Eye-Fi card for uploading your pictures, then this piece of news is just for you - Eye-Fi will turn your regular card, into a card with the same features as their newest Explore card for free ! The Eye-Fi Explore card features free Wi-Fi hotspot access at any Wayport location for one year, as well as free geotagging of your photos using the Skyhook system. You can read more about what Geotagging is on the Eye-Fi site but in a nutshell, it involves adding some hidden information to your photos with the location the photo was taken. Once you return home, you can view your images online, and instantly see where you were when you took the photo. To get these new features, you have to follow several simple steps: Insert your Eye-Fi Card or Eye-Fi Share into the card reader. Launch the Eye-Fi Manager and log into your account Navigate to Settings Click on Upload to Web Select your SmugMug profile, and DELETE it (you will NOT lose any of your upload histories) Click to Add another photo service Notice how SmugMug is now at the top :-) Select it, and enter your account credentials Go back to Settings, and notice how now, you have Geotagging and Hotspots as new features on y ...
