Thick clouds of smoke began rolling into the county late this afternoon, causing some residents to wonder if yet more wildfires have been started. According to a representative from Cal Fire, a combination of the weather and shifting winds, along with increased fire activity in the Siskiyou Complex fires near Happy Camp, accounted for the thicker smoke. A Klamath National Forest (KNF) news release states the following regarding the Siskiyou Complex fires: Current Fire Situation: In the late afternoon and evening Sunday the fire picked up as the smoke cleared and the air mixed out of the canyons. Moderate fire spread occurred with short active crown runs and spotting. During the night the inversions began to set in and the fire primarily spread by roll out. The inversion is expected to cause increased issues with smoke. Once the inversion lifts gusty and erratic winds in the canyons could occur. The steep inaccessible terrain continues to hamper containment efforts. Significant Karuk and Yurok Tribal cultural and religious sites continue to be at risk. The main objective: During the next few operational periods crews will continue to prepare and construct hand fire line along the south and east edges of the fire in preparation of a large burn out operation to secure the fire line along Hwy 96. Crews will continue to hold and mop up in areas with completed line on the northeast edge of the fire. Structure protection planning is in place ...
