A strain of the salmonella bacteria that sickened more than 1,300 people has been found in a serrano pepper and a sample of irrigation water at a farm in Mexico, U.S. health officials said Wednesday. ... Before commencing deliberations, jury foreman Sam Hendrix began each day with his fellow jurors by holding hands and saying a payer. They prayed for the defendants, including former Governor Don Siegelman, who had been indicted for bribery and government corruption. "We didn't want to crucify people," Hendrix told the Auburn Villager , "but we did want to send a message." As for the jury comprised of five whites and seven blacks, "we were all really good friends," Hendrix told the Montgomery Advertiser in July 2006. "There was a bond between us. It never got personal. I think we were very fortunate that we had a very congenial group of people who respected each other and listened to each other." Katie Langer, who also sat on the jury, agreed. "We really did get along," she told the Associated Press. "By the end we looked forward to going. We were bringing pictures in of our families." Hendrix, who works as a fundraiser for Auburn University, and Langer, who teaches gymnastics, were the only two jurors in the Siegelman trial who spoke to the press. Each of them gave multiple interviews. Both dismissed any notion of rifts among jurors, even though the jury itself had twice notified the judge that it was deadlocked. Both insisted that it was simply a matter of needing sufficient time to adequately evaluate each of the charges against each of the four defendants. Other jurors saw it differently. Peppers were apparently the perps in the salmonella outbreak that sickened some 1,300 people in the U.S. and Canada since April. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it traced the responsible bacterial strain--Salmonella Saintpaul--to a Serrano pepper grown on a Mexican farm that irrigated its fields with water contaminated with it. What was billed as the big day for the DOJ and FBI to show us the results of their yawningly long investigation into the post 9/11 anthrax letter bombs, was less than satisfying, at least in my mind.
