There still was emotion and big plays on both sides of the ball. And big penalties. On the opening drive, Smithfield-Selma went for it on fourth and long from its own 40, and Josh Barbour sacked Anthony Rouse. With good field position, South Johnston moved the field down to the 11, where Andrew Carroll kicked a 29-yard field goal. In the second quarter, Trojan Shan Wright intercepted Rouse and returned it about 50 yards. A penalty brought the ball back to midfield, but South Johnston moved the ball down to the 16 with a little help from a 15-yard penalty. Carroll kicked a 34-yard field goal and South Johnston took a 6-0 lead. “We had been playing flat all night,” said Spartans coach Anthony Barbour. Stymied several times in the first half, Smithfield-Selma finally made the most of its last possession of the half, and Rouse scored on a 2-yard keeper. With the kick from Henry Johnson, Smithfield-Selma took a 7-6 lead with 20 seconds left in the half. “Our defense kept us in it all night,” said Barbour. South Johnson had a scare when running back Tony Davis went down on the final play of the half. Emergency medics carried him off the field, but he returned in the second half. Garner’s defense was in step to start the second half forcing two turnovers and pinning Smithfield-Selma Senior deep in its zone after some bad snaps. The Trojan offense used the short field to its advantage giving Garner a 28-7 win over SSS in Greater Neuse 4A conference play Friday night. Garner (5-3, 3-1), replacing three key Seniors from last year, has played well of late. “I’m really proud of our play the last three weeks,” head coach Nelson Smith said. Fullback Michael Brantley had two rushing touchdowns in the second half and tailback Jeremy Conyers added another as the Trojans scored 22 unanswered points after the Spartans posted a 7-6 halftime lead. On the first play from scrimmage to start the third quarter, Trojans’ Terrence Jones recovered a SSS fumble at the Spartan 26-yard line. Five plays later Brantley rushed up the middle for the score. The two-point conversion gave the Trojans a 14-7 lead. The Spartans (4-4, 1-3) never got back on track, totaling only 55 yards of offense from scrimmage in the second half. “I think our depth showed in the second half,” Spartan head coach Anthony Barbour said.
