Canalys have crunched the numbers and produced some definitive Smartphone Sales stats for Q2 for EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa). Always interesting reading, the highlights this time are that 38% of devices had built-in GPS, 58% had built-in Wi-Fi and 13% had touch-screens. Nokia shipped almost 9 million smartphones in this region alone, with 71% market share - 7% is the share of RIM and HTC, more or less in joint second place. According to a popular Apple blog , U.S. Best Buy retail stores will be the first independent reseller of Apple's iPhone device beginning in September. An Associated Press report confirmed the rumour. But will the distribution expand past the border to Canada? Apprently not, says Best Buy Canada spokeswoman Heather Seabrook. "This announcement was just for the US, we are still in discussions on having the phone in stores in Canada," Mr. Seabrook said in an e-mail. Regardless of another Canadian distribution channel, Apple will certainly see an uptick in Sales of the popular Smartphone device with the addition of 970 full-size stores and 16 smaller Best Buy Mobile stores. Cellphone Sales were down 13 percent in Q2, but those that were sold were more feature-rich than the devices sold a year ago, according to a new report from the NPD Group. Handsets with Qwerty keyboards saw the greatest increase – jumping to 28 percent, up from 12 percent of all cellphones sold a year ago. Smartphone Sales comprised 19 percent of all mobile phone Sales in the quarter, marking a 9 percent increase from the same period last year. Bluetooth-enabled phones jumped from 69 percent to 81 percent and music-enabled phones climbed from 45 percent to 65 percent, the report concluded. ( Release ).
