Smart People is a blackly comic drama set in Pittsburgh, which focuses on widowed professor Lawrence Wetherhold (Dennis Quaid), his study-mad daughter Vanessa (Ellen Page) and his student poet son James (Ashton Holmes). Lawrence struggles to communicate with his family and his colleagues at the university where he teaches literature, even though his is a "Smart person". When his adopted brother Chuck (Thomas Haden Church) moves in, the slacker brings some much needed warmth in to the family, which is further improved when Lawrence gets involved with another "Smart person", Dr Janet Hartigan (Sarah Jessica Parker). To find out what I thought about the film just read more ...

Personal Development for Smart People Mastermind Group (Healthy Eating) Hello Everyone! :) I've spent the last four or five years not really knowing what to eat so I've decided to get this area handled once and for all.... ...this face closely resembles how I look when I think of my current diet   hmmmmm ...and this is how I would like my face to look like once I've got my diet in order :D (preferably not green) So put simply I want to get from this face  to this one :D and I thought I'd post on here to see if any of you lovely People wanted to come along for the ride... Savvy? You see I am very keen to do whatever it takes to get my diet, eating patterns and habits to a much heathier and more intelligent place and I'm keen to get others involved with this process yet my family and almost all of the People I know couldn't give a monkeys about improving their diets. When I have spoken to those I know about diet and personal development in general many look at me as if I'm from another planet  or they get overwhelmed and get angry  or confused  or embarrassed :o (Gee wiz I love emoticons!!) This can be really frustrating when you have so many enthusiastic ideas and goals and yet there isn't anybody there to share them with :( and I've found my own progress to be slow and more painful than it needs to be. It took me a while to figure out that anything that I want to accomplish will come to fruition ...

Rent It The Movie: If you went solely by the movies, one might think that college professors are the unhappiest People in the world. From The Wonder Boys and The Squid and the Whale to The Savages and The Visitor , filmdom has effectively painted academia as a toxic hell of narcissistic, self-loathing misanthropes. And those are the lovable ones. The march of the college curmudgeon continues in Smart People , a dramedy in which Dennis Quaid sports a beard and a fat suit to play a cold intellectual desperately in need of an emotional thawing. It traipses ever so closely to the realm of indie preciousness, but the picture is ultimately bolstered by a first-rate cast who (mostly) rescue their respective characters from clich . The cranky professor du jour of Smart People is Lawrence Wetherhold, a gloomy widower who teaches literatur... Read the entire review ...

Fox News recently picked up on a piece by the National Post’s Jonathan Kay which takes on the Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC) because one of its columnists, Heather Mallick, recently included incendiary comments in her September 5 column , on CBC's Web site, "A Mighty Wind blows through Republican convention," about Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, contending that Palin has the "toned-down version of the porn actress look," and attacking People in small towns as she charged that Palin "added nothing to the ticket that the Republicans didn't already have sewn up, the white trash vote, the demographic that sullies America's name inside and outside its borders yet has such a curious appeal for the right." Mallick defined "white trash" as "rural, loud, proudly unlettered (like Bush himself), suspicious of the urban, frankly disbelieving of the foreign, and a fan of the American cliché of authenticity. The semiotics are pure Palin: a sturdy body, clothes that are clinging yet boxy and a voice that could peel the plastic seal off your new microwave." And as to why People in rural areas vote for Republicans, Mallick explained her view that "red states vote Republican on social issues to give themselves the only self-esteem available to their broken, economically abused existence." In a second column she wrote for the British newspaper, "The Guardian," which also ran on September 5, Mallick revealed herself to have ...

I won’t hire stupidity or mediocracy. Alright, my blood is boiling and I really don’t have time to write a blog in the middle of the day. I usually save this for sometime between midnight and 4 am! Catalogs.com just posted an ad on Career Builder and on CraigsList . Full-time salaried copywriter with benefits (what I would consider a pretty darn attractive offering, given this awful economy and even worse job opportunity environment) . Well, the ad CLEARLY states our company’s name and our URL: www.Catalogs.com . The ad also CLEARLY states to send writing SAMPLES along with your resume (hello… it’s a copywriter position) . Well, I placed the ad at 11:30pm last night (can you tell I never sleep?) and have received 11 resumes as of 11:06am this morning, and NOT ONE has provided a sample of their writing. Then, I just received a delightful phone call from a gentleman that never looked at our site, had no concept of what we did, and goes onto spell our name incorrectly when he repeats the email …. catalogues. For all of you job seekers out there, wise up … 1. Read the ad and learn how to follow instructions. 2. Provide the employer with ALL of the required and requested information. 3. If the add says local, in-house full time position, don’t bother to email a resume if you live out-of-state UNLESS you clearly mention when you will be living in the same city soon. 4. Don’t call unless you have done your own research on the company --- you ...

A slow economy brings out the fustiness in all of us, which might be why private libraries are making a comeback. Says a New York architect: "Libraries connote elegance and quality." Mass-market home builders are sipping the tea too— they're putting libraries in their floorplans and rolling out the rolling ladders. What of the fact that tons of People do most of their reading online nowadays, if at all? An author's advice: "If you're not reading what's on your bookshelves, you should find something else to decorate with." Like, say, DVDs. [WSJ] ...

Smart People is not, more’s the pity, a feature length actioner led by a bunch of immaculately well turned out gents in tweed. No, when they say ‘Smart’, the makers of this film mean the American version of Smart, better known to us Euros as intelligent, clever or big bloody brainboxes. Here, the Smart person in question is Dennis Quaid, and for us, his brainy bragging rights are already well secured- after all, he did pilot his way out of Martin Short in Inner Space, which is no mean feat. ...
