Over at O'Reilly Digital Media, Derrick Story has posted an interview he did with Deke at last Spring's Photoshop World, wherein Deke enlightens O'Reilly's evangelist on the mysteries of Smart objects. It's a fun conversation, with Deke the graphics guru and Photoshop connoiseur enlightening Derrick the photographer and Photoshop anarchist. (I like the audio only when my eyes need a break from the screen, or you know, I'm driving a car.) OK, so this picture is actually from last month in Las Vegas (y'all are going to figure it out from the dekePod logo on the screen anyway). But it is, in fact, Deke and Derrick, and they are talking about something related to Photoshop. It could be Smart objects. And my shots from Orlando were apparently affected by humidity. It just so happens these are the two Guys I'm putting out there for my Photoshop CS4 book offerings this fall. You all know what Deke has to offer, and the Adobe Photoshop CS4 One-on-One book will be ready as soon as the project launches (thanks to Deke's amazing amazing team--Carol, Spink, Ron, Julie, David, Toby--woohoo!). Derrick's book, The Photoshop CS4 Companion for Photographers , will be day-and-date with CS4 as well, providing photographers with a streamlined plan for Photoshop that gives them everything they need, and nothing they don't. See? I gotcha covered. 'Cause I know Smart when I see it. Read more »  ...

Susan Suess Kennedy wrote an article recently for the Huffington Post examining why Americans have such a disdain for Smart people. A popular terms among the non-intellectuals and shallow thinkers is “elistism.” The undereducated white Guys chant this, along with “drill baby, drill” (which I don’t really get as a mantra, but ok..) Here’s the [...] ...

Three's a charm, isn't it? With the unexpected termination of Tommy Bowden of Clemson, there have to be a few other coaches who now know, the inevitable is coming sooner than later. While Clemson may have given Bowden an ultimatum - win the ACC or else - the timing of this stinks. The only ones who get hurt by this are the players themselves. They are now with a lame duck coach and total instability on the sidelines. Why are these early-firings coming so early? MONEY. Thanks to the BCS, it's big bowl or bust, and schools spending millions upon millions on student-athletes in a down economy are feeling pressure to react to boosters who lost half their savings in the stock market or 401ks. The boosters are feeling the pinch, and they want some return on their donations. Win it, dammit. Who's next in the firing squad? Tyrone Willingham and Tommy Tuberville. Reports have surfaced (Ben Maller's rumors 10/12/08) that U-Dub is already shopping another coach, which has to do wonders for the Huskies' morale. While the school has publicly backed Willingham, unnamed sources are leaking a shopping list for Washington's new coach. Nice job, Guys. Tommy Tuberville is also looking at a new job shortly. His premature firing of OC Tony Franklin was so shocking, that you have to think Tuberville was presented a similar ultimatum prior to the Arkansas game. With Arky beating Auburn, it now looks like Tuberville's genius isn't as Smart as Franklin' ...

The New York Times, a well-known font of information in the area of information technology, published Revived Fervor for Smart Monitors Linked to a Server, an article by Ashlee Vance October 13th. If the NY Times gets around to saying something about technology, it's pretty well known by those in the industry. Access virtualization, such as that mentioned by the times article has been around for quite some time. While the article points out the efforts of the big Guys in the market, folks such as ClearCube, Pano Technologies, VDIworks and Wyse weren't mentioned in my quick read. It's often the case that the most innovative technology comes from one of the smaller players (later to be acquired by one... ...

I promise I searched on this before I posted, and I read the 'How do I get started', but I didn't see anything for the PS3 specifically. I just started it a few days ago, and I think its ran for about 8hrs total. I was trying to figure out how to set it up for Team Helix. I see that you Guys say that you're "Team 4", and in the PS3 options, there is a way to "Join an existing team", and when I do, it asks for the team number, is this where I just put the digit 4? (I guess I am thinking "Wow...you Guys were the 4th team to sign up? Hard to believe, but I guess its possible) Anyway....normally pretty Smart feller, but things aren't clicking on this one for me and any help would be appreciated. You have to marvel at the Times for keeping neocon columnist Bill Kristol on its op-ed page. He's not Smart, he writes poorly and he's nothing but a GOP flack. Today's column urges McCain to get rid of his campaign staff and run as the great guy he is. It's typical Kristol, all simplistic strategy, no discussion of issues. Why does Kristol care who wins? One, because the neocon drive on Iran will collapse without McCain. And, two, only a GOP administration will employ his friends. The Times is really something else. There is that faker David Brooks who, in private, can't stand the 2008 McCain, is horrified by Palin and will no doubt vote for Obama but, in public, plays the part of tweedy Republican. He's no Republican. Like Kristol, the only thing that attracts him to the GOP is the neocon agenda although, for him, that is surely not enough to make him vote for McCain. I don't know which of these Guys offends me ore. Kristol, the happy hack. Or Brooks, the agonizing fake who refuses to level with his readers. What is wrong with the Times? ...

Allow me a slightly lengthy preface here. Here at NYGMen, I’ve long relied upon the unique stats created by the Smart Guys at FootballOutsiders.com, especially their DVOA stat, which breaks down each play and determines its success based on situation and opponent. No, not the action figures, but the financial big wheels. There seems to be a general consensus of opinion out there that these Guys and their underlings "the bankers" and "the city" basically fumbled the play, dropped the ball, spilt the milk, whatever euphemism you want to use. There used to be a saying in prison, "If you're so Smart, what are you doing in here?" The flipside of this is, as reassuring as it may be for everyone who just watched their pensions go up in smoke to congregate and agree that these Guys made a monumental mistake, this simply is not a logical perspective. ...

The Bills’ defense was bad, and Marcus Stroud came along and now it’s pretty good. Of course, there are other reasons why they’ve put forth decent showings in four-fifths of their games unlike last year when they were Fiat-reliable: Paul Posluszny is healthy and positively destructive, for one, while defensive coordinator Perry Fewell is letting his Guys run loose on a limited yet fruitful basis in his Smart blitzing scheme. But Stroud is the one who is changing games simply with his presence, and he’s most importantly making 10 teammates’ lives easier every snap. RF365 ...

One month a year Dani Kelly tries to draw attention in an attempt to educate woman about breast cancer. After being deemed cancer free in 2003, she spent about a year giving inspirational speeches, urging women to have mammograms and draping herself in pink. That was five years ago. Now the 42-year-old refuses to let cancer run her life, and she has a different mantra. “I’m pretty much fine most of the rest of the year,” she said. “This is the one month of the year that I’m a survivor and I’m not just Dani Kelly. “Yes, I’m a breast cancer survivor,” Kelly said “But that’s not all I am.” Mammogram’s importance October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and women around the world are sharing their stories and watching America turn pink. Kelly’s story begins a few years ago, when her doctor gave her a card reminding her to get a mammogram when she turned 35. She didn’t go. At 36, her doctor lectured her on the importance of having a mammogram, but she still didn’t go. At 37, Kelly had her first mammogram, and doctors found a small malignancy the size of a pencil eraser in her left breast. Doctors told her without a mammogram, she probably wouldn’t have noticed the lump for four years. When her doctor called to say he’d like to take another look, Kelly’s Smart sense of humor kicked in. “I said, ‘yeah, you Guys just want really good pictures of my boobs,’ ” she said. When she went back to the doctor on a Friday in May 2003, she saw th ...
