The inscription of Georgetown as a World Heritage Site was announced by Unesco, or the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation , when the Paris-based World Heritage Council met in Quebec, Canada, yesterday. There are a total of eight new cultural sites added to Unesco’s World Heritage List, namely: 1 ) Melaka and George Town, historic cities of the Straits of Malacca (Malaysia) 2 ) Kuk Early Agricultural Site (Papua New Guinea) 3 ) Stari Grad Plain (Croatia) 4 ) Fortifications of Vauban (France) 5 ) Berlin Modernism Housing Estates (Germany) 6 ) Mantua and Sabbioneta (Italy) 7 ) San Marino Historic Centre and Mount Titano (San Marino) 8 ) The Wooden Churches of the Slovak part of Carpathian Mountain Area (Slovakia) In the case of Georgetown, to be inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage List, an effort by Malaysia since 2004 are core areas made up of historical sites in Georgetown which include the Lebuh Acheh historical enclave and sites such as the Lebuh Acheh Malay Mosque, Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Kling Mosque, the Goddess of Mercy Temple, Sri Mariamman Temple, Khoo Kongsi, St George’s Church, Assumption Church, St Xavier’s Institution, Convent Light Street, Little India, the Museum and court building, the commercial area of Beach Street, Fort Cornwallis, Esplanade, City Hall, the clan jetties and the port areas. As the days go by, we'll learn of a number of historical, cultural, and genealogical resources which have sustained losses or damage due to the Midwest floods. One such resource is the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. There is no telephone service to the facility as of now. Our local community of Czechs, many of whom live in neighborhoods surrounding Czech Village or whose families settled in southwest Cedar Rapids generations ago, have endured countless losses. Our hearts go out to them and to everyone in the Cedar Rapids community who is coping with outcomes of the disaster. The staff of the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library does not yet know the extent of the damage to the Museum and we will not know for some time.
