An Addison school will finally have a playground, thanks to a non-profit organization. But first, the school needs to raise $10,000 for playground equipment. Addison School District 4 has announced that KaBOOM!, a nonprofit organization with the goal of building play spaces within walking distance of every child in North America, will be building a playground at Ardmore School in October. Ardmore, located at 600 S. Ardmore Ave., has an enrollment of nearly 600 preschool and kindergarten students. The playground will be built by community volunteers and members of KaBOOM!, Principal Michele Ramsey said. A Chicago Bear is even slated to lend a hand. KaBOOM!, corporate sponsor Home Depot and the National Football League will be partnering with Ardmore to build a playground behind the school that is designed for children from 3 to 6 years old, district spokeswoman Diane Junokas said. Chicago Bear defensive back Charles Tillman is expected to join volunteers in building the playground. For the past decade, KaBOOM! has used a community-build model to bring together business and community interests to construct nearly 1,000 playgrounds, Skate parks, sports fields and ice rinks across North America. Skin cancer accounts for more than half of all cancers in the United States and it is estimated that more than one million new cases will be diagnosed in 2008. Research shows that much of the damage to skin is done in the first 18 years of life and protecting skin and eyes during this time can reduce the risk of some types of skin cancer by up to 78 percent. In response to these statistics, FMC Arenas and the SHADE Foundation of America have teamed up to create Skating in the SHADE , a free public skating hour every week between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The goal is to start learned behavior in children and parents to be “Sun-Wise” by finding alternative activities during peak UV hours, use sun block, get examined, and avoid long exposures to the sun. The FMC operated Burlington Ice Palace, 36 Ray Avenue, will host Skating in the SHADE every Saturday at 11 a.m. throughout the summer. During difficult economic times, finding recreational activities an entire family can enjoy together is no easy task. I just purchased a ginormous 2009 calendar, to hang aside my ginormous 2008 calendar. Before the competitive seasons begins, I like to mark down what is happening when. You may be asking, "Why not use your computer to do this?" Great question and for the life of me, I cannot get used to looking at a calendar on the computer. It's almost like it's the last paper thing I'm clinging to before I go completely digital. There's something about turning the pages to see the next months that is very calming. Hey, I save a lot of money on spa treatments! But anyway, I look forward to marking up my calendar because then I know that 1) the skating season resumes shortly (yay!) and 2) the rink I usually Skate at during the season, Rockefeller Center Skating Rink in NYC, will open shortly (double yay!). I thought I would start breaking the international competitions down for you folks who would like to be as neurotic as I am. In preparation, you need a calendar, pen, highlighter, a few magic markers, and lots of White-Out. Let's start with the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating.
