I always enjoyed spotting mischievous reworkings of ' Fawlty Towers ' on the hotel sign which appeared for a few seconds at the beginning of each episode of that brilliant TV series. It turns out that Ben's musings and pictures of East Devon were inspired by a recent visit to the area, when he returned to see his 93-year-old grandmother... It was widely reported earlier that Pakistan had captured Adam Gadahn in a counterterrorism raid in Kirachi. We all hoped it was true. Once again - as is so often the case with "unnamed Pakistani official(s)" - the first report is wrong. Likely a matter of confusing non-Western names, in this case 'Yahya.' It was not Adam Yahya Gadahn (aka Azzam al-Amriki, aka Azzam the American, aka Yahya Majadin Adams, aka Adam Pearlman) but rather an "Abu Yahya Mujahideen al-Adams." I like to refer to it as the Yahya Sisterhood. Terrorists hate being laughed at more than being shot at. The latter is reported (sourcing yet more unnamed US and Pakistani officials) to be an American "al-Qaeda commander" from Pennsylvania. While disappointing that it was not the incredibly annoying California native currently producing al-Qaeda's English language video propaganda, a captured al-Qaeda terrorist - especially a traitorous American al-Qaeda terrorist - is nothing to get glum about. The US ambassador to Pakistan just days ago noted the urgency of finding American Muslims currently in Pakistan and Yemen for terrorist training. The realistic expectation is that they would use their citizenship and passports to re-enter America and attack her. Reproduced below, a portion of our March 8 DailyBriefing . Reader Belinda sent in this picture of her gorgeous mom in a handmade floral dress (between two little ghosts from the Shining) in Vanuatu--near New Guinea. "She was and still is a very stylish lady and actually did do modelling in her younger days and make all of our clothes." Meanwhile in over in the Ukraine, Oleksandra Korobova's mom donned pretty much the exact same dress. "I found this shot in an old family album. It dates back to late 70's (1979, most likely) when my mom Olga Romanova (with her mom) was 17–18 years old and about to graduate from high school." Please Fed-Ex the dress to Brooklyn next. I don't care what that no-good Alexis Bledel tells you, it's my turn. ...

This short essay is from my second attempt at this Sisterhood project in 2008. I tagged along with North Augusta High’s varsity cheerleaders only a couple times for a quick piece for the newspaper I used to work for. It’s funny, these girls definitely were a great team and a family, and even with a camera and just shy of ten years their elder, I felt like the nerdy high school outsider. Here’s the short text that accompanied the photo page: North Augusta High School’s varsity cheerleaders are more than dedicated athletes. They are a Sisterhood. About 40 girls tried out in the spring. The 16 girls who made the team started practicing in August. They practice every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon from August to February — from the start of football season to the end of basketball season. They practice three hours each week, not counting the running and stretching beforehand. The girls give up at least four hours of their Friday nights for home games to cheer on their classmates on the field. For away games, they can spend two hours on the bus. Practices, games and travel time equates to roughly 83 hours, not counting pep rallies, painting fans before games and more. Coach Cindy Cawthon views cheerleading as a performing art. It is also extremely athletic, she said. “What other athlete has to lift up a teammate over their head?” The teammates must trust each other. Four cheerleaders lift a teammate above their heads, supporti ...

A few months back, my mom told me about this supper club she and a few other women were starting in their neighborhood. They started by going out for dinner once, and then agreed upon a theme for the next meeting and met at one woman’s house for a potluck-type meal. When I say potluck though, I’m not talking about tuna casserole and crockpots of chili! Last night, my mom asked me if I’d like to join them for their Southeast Asian-themed dinner, I happily agreed! I felt badly that I didn’t have time to bring anything, but my mom insisted it wasn’t a problem. She thought it would be a great experience and I’d get to meet some fantastic people. She was right on both counts! We walked in to the house and were greeted with “Would you like a drink?” As much as I wanted to try the hostess’ Singapore Sling cocktails, I opted instead for a mocktail of seltzer, pineapple juice, and a cherry. There was the most gorgeous centerpiece on the kitchen island full of ingredients the hostess used in her dishes. It served as a trivia game to win a bottle of wine! Can you name everything on that tray? I couldn’t! The last of the members arrived, including Liz from Lazy Cook, Crazy Cook (a fantastic blog, by the way, I recommend you check it out!) and some cooking ensued! There were pork potstickers with two dipping sauces to munch on while the other amazing dishes simmered away. Liz got busy cooking her Pho, a Vietnamese beef and noodle soup. It was qu ...
