At Barney's shoe sale the best selection is in size 5 or 10. I read it on the front page of Thursday's Style section of the Times . This was the first time I had ever heard of an advantage to wearing a size 10. I have a long, sad history of shoe size trauma so this was big news. My problem began with Mary Janes, the round-toed, black patent leather shoes with a strap across the instep that are de rigueur for little girls in party dresses. As an eight-year-old with size 7 feet, Mary Janes were a non-starter. They were children's shoes and came in children's sizes. Unfortunately, my feet were definitely adult-sized. Giant Mary Janes didn't exist then. If my 8-year-old self or a contemporary doppleganger needed giant Mary Janes today, she could go to Barney's shoe sale and ask her mom for the $529 Louboutin version, open toed and deep purple. Cute with white knee sox, doncha think? My history of shoe trauma is highlighted by trips to Tall Gals Shoes, featuring attractive footwear for gigantic nurses or maybe my grandmother--and not my chic grandmother either. I never learned to ice-skate because the only rental skates in my size were the dread boys' skates---low brown shoes with hockey blades, not the pretty white boots that girls wore to twirl in the center of the rink. A story about shoe size can no more avoid Cinderella than General Motors can avoid bankruptcy. The Times writer saves her Cinderella reference for the end as she mu ...

Hmmmm. Very interesting that one of the first administration shuffles has the First Lady replacing her chief of staff (a former Iowa campaign worker) with Chicago friend Susan Sher, until recently a deputy White House counsel. Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett's bosom buddy, Sher is one of the three hard-charging Chicago transplants--along with Jarrett and White House social secretary Desiree Rogers--renting units in the snazzy 3303 Water Street complex in Georgetown. (One colleague joked that the enclave has developed a bit of a sorority feel to it.) The three are thick as thieves and, along with Michelle O., present a formidable if unoffical block of influence. Look out, guys.   -- Michelle Cottle ...

An Iowa Sisterhood that developed out of shared grief has no interest in increasing its numbers. In fact, the five founding Iowa women are hard at work to decrease their prospective membership pool. Tiffan Yamen, Kate Safris, Janet Petersen, Jan Caruthers and Kerry Biondi-Morlan discovered one another in 2003 after each had experienced the death of an infant daughter, and their shared experiences sparked a new mission. ...

When I first watched the 2008 rendition of Mamma Mia (starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, etc.) my mind was sent into immediate hiding when the film opened with incredibly loud female shrieks on a dock. The shrieks split sky and eardrum alike and instantly put my brain into a stupor – Sisterhood repeats the assault, but over and over again. However, unlike Mamma Mia, the screams in Sisterhood are meant to elicit laughter (not just migraines), because that’s the caliber of comedy it has to offer. The film may deserve some credit for performing admirably well considering it’s a barebones independent feature created on a shoestring budget, but there are some parts which just can’t be redeemed. Years ago, Jack (Nicholas Ball) had a really good con going: he’d romance a woman, buy her a vacuum and then get her to sign away her possessions under the guise of the vacuum’s lifetime warranty form. Some twenty years later, two women, whose recently deceased mothers were both involved with Jack, set out to find him after he makes claim on their properties using the deeds he acquired via his con. Shirley (Emily Corcoran), a country bumpkin, leaves her farm in New Zealand to meet her half-sister whose location her mother disclosed to her before passing. And so it goes that the upper-crust Brit, Catherine (Isabelle Defaut) should come home one evening, with her adulterous beau (Graham McTavish) in tow, to find a crass, hairy-legged Kiwi cra ...

To the editor: Evie Collins, one of Danville's loveliest ladies, went home to her Lord on June 20, 2009. For many years, she and her husband, Roy, had lived on Pine Street in the beautiful home he had built. A carpenter by trade, Roy used his talents to produce a home that reflected the natural beauty of the wood he so expertly crafted. ...

It was a Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants reunion in NYC last night as Blake Lively, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel gathered for dinner at Five Points. Blake brought Penn Bagdley to fill in as an honorary member of the party. The ladies have branched out with their separate projects these days, but it seems like there's still a solid camaraderie among the girls if they ever want to get together for another sequel.
