Silicon Image’s InstaPort technology adds intelligence to HDMI™ technology-enabled digital television (DTV) inputs, resulting in sub-second switching time between inputs delivering digital content from different sources connected to the DTV. ...

If you have multiple HDMI sources connected to a pre-pro, switcher or TV display, have you ever noticed the rather irritating lag time during switching? I do, I have a desktop display that take about 10 seconds then display a failed HDCP authentication message (it works nevertheless) on the screen every time I turn the TV on. On my Home Theater setup, I have five HDMI sources connected to a Preamp processor. The lag time varies from 3 to 5 seconds, better than the LCD display but could definitely improve with the InstaPort from Silicon Image. With Silicon Image’s InstaPort technology, HDMI access time can be further accelerated and shaved the lag time down to less than a second! The company explains the InstaPort authenticate HDCP process instantaneously and simultaneously when the devices are connected, not when the input is selected. The company also says InstaPort be featured in Samsung’s next generation TV displays and is currently under evaluation at nine of the top ten HDTV manufacturers for next year’s models. Silicon Valley has a male testosterone driven Image. It is a fact pure and simple that the chino brigade outnumbers the fairer sex in the boardroom and on the high tech shop floor. Studies have shown that about 20% of IT jobs are held by women and an even smaller proportion occupy a C-level office. A report last year by UC Davis showed that despite Silicon Valley's cutting edge Image it ranked dead last for female execs. A mere 9% in case you are wondering. A while back California Congresswoman Jackie Speier said "The growth of women in executive offices and board rooms is as slow as molasses." When I was here in 2000, there were a small number of very able women getting the job done. From Meg Whitman at eBay to Carol Bartz at Autodesk and Carly Fiorina at HP. Though her role was controversial to say the least and she was eventually driven out of her job. Despite the dismal results of the UC Davis study, women in senior roles certainly seem to be much more visible than they were back in the dotcom craze. They occupy starring roles at conferences and grace the front pages of magazines and newspapers like never before. But the question still remains as to what kind of dent they have made in that glass ceiling. The Valley Girls series isn't so much concerned with answering that question as meeting some of the women who are trying to make their mark and shape the culture of the Valley and the industry. This is not going to be a crusa ...

Filed under: Displays , Ports , Samsung We heard about Silicon Image's InstaPort fast HDMI switching tech back in July, and now it seems we're finally seeing implementation. Samsung has emerged as the first manufacturer to buy in, with its next-generation HDTVs to include the sub-second HDMI port switching functionality. Also, we're told that nine of the top ten TV makers are currently testing the product, which means they should be ready to roll by next year. Unfortunately, we're not clued in on what exact models will include the port / input processors, so here's hoping this means "all" Samsung sets. Samsung has announced that it will build Silicon Image's InstaPort technology into its new line of digital TV technology. Put simply, SI's technology adds "intelligence" to multiple HDMI ports and reduces the amount of time it takes to switch between them to under a second. "Samsung agrees that port switching time is an issue with today's sophisticated consumers who have multiple HDMI technology-enabled devices connected to their DTV at any given time," said Lew Paceley, DTV marketing director at Silicon Image, Inc. "As the industry leader in delivering state of the art digital television products, Samsung endorses InstaPort technology for the improvement it provides to consumers in their HDTV entertainment experience."... ...
