The Sierra Sands Unified School District will receive a $94,200 English-Language Learner Acquisition and Development Pilot Project grant, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell announced Wednesday. Sierra Sands is one of 44 districts that will share $20 million in grant funding. Special Projects, Assessment and Educational Technology Coordinator Laura Hickle said staff-development activities will be conducted for two or more teachers from each elementary school in 2008-09 and additional two to four teachers from each school in 2009-10. "This pilot project will identify the best practices around the state to help us close California's pernicious achievement gap between higher-achieving students and English learners," said O'Connell. The pilot project was established in 2006. Assembly Bill 2117, subsequently, California Education Code Section 420 authorized the project to be conducted over a three-year period and provided funding to identify existing best practices regarding topics such as curriculum, instruction and staff development for teaching English-language learners, and promoting English language and academic English acquisition and development. O’Connell said 1,761 eligible schools applied, and 44 were selected based on a number of criteria.
