Led by an eccentric and electrifying front man (who was born and raised in Quebec and later moved to Germany at the age of 22), King Khan and the Shrines are a garage rock/psychedelic soul band that puts on one hell of a live show. Anyone that was at their NXNE show in Toronto back in 2006 (pictured above) can surely attest to this. On July 23rd and 24th, King Khan and the Shrines will be rocking the Horseshoe , and we want you to be there. More... ...

King Khan embodies the spirit of 60s garage rock. This is a genre that has never really gone away, but it is one that I think should get more respect. Sure bands like the Shrines and the Black Lips may lack overall musicianship, but they more than make up for it in pure unadulterated fun. The Kingsmen barely knew how to play their instruments, but you wouldn't slight Louie Louie, would you? Would you? - R.T. Tickets are $12 @ Blue Skies Turn Black La Sala Rossa, 4848 Boulevard St. Laurent, Montreal, QC ...

There's a great book called "Saturday Shrines: College Football's Most Hallowed Grounds," put out by the Sporting News, ©2005. In a section called "101 things that make a Stadium special," by Tom Dienhart, the No. 1 aspect of college football was "Checkered Past." "You instantly know you're watching a Tennessee game at Neyland Stadium when you see those orange-and-white checkerboard end zones." If you can get a copy of this book, get it. The pictures of collegiate stadia make the book a keeper. By the way, the book shows a picture of red and white checkerboards at Fresno State's Bulldog Field. When you look at it, it's similar to the real thing. Similar, but not matching. COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF 2008 50 DAYS OUT: The 1958 football season was pretty much forgettable, what with no All-America or All-SEC selections. End Murray Armstrong did make Academic All-SEC, with an A average in pre-medicine. Bobby Urbano was team captain. Defensively, the Vols weren't bad, giving up 122 points in 10 games, but couldn't score with a pencil, scoring but 77. The Vols lost to Chattanooga Nov. 8 by a 14-6 count, a decision that caused an ugly scene at game's end. Victories that season were over Mississippi State, Alabama, Mississippi, and Vanderbilt. The Mississippi game was an upset, the last win over the Rebels until 1967. The Vols defeated Vanderbilt when the Commodores were No. 15 in the AP poll. Tennessee earned a safety against Kentucky when Rog ...

“Can you feel it, baby? Can you?!” King Khan and his Shrines rolled into the Larimer Lounge on Thursday for a night of old-fashioned rock ‘n' roll. Photos by Julio Enriquez . King Khan & the Shrines brought their grease-tinged, Southern throwback rock to the Larimer Lounge on Thursday with the Jacuzzi Boys and the Nicotine Fits. At times, lead singer King Khan even ventured the audience to bring that sweaty rock ‘n' roll to the (modest) masses. Regular Reverb contributor and photographer Julio Enriquez was there to catch the action. Check out his photo essay below. (more…) ...

Ever had a shrine in your house? We opened the lines on the show today and found that a lot of you actually do. Corners of houses dedicated to toy dragons, a collection of ford escorts, a memorial to old girlfriends (with rankings). They all came to the surface this morning. However the cream of the crop was Lee who told us about his Dad's shrine in his downstairs loo. If you missed it, have a listen . On tomorrows show, we've got the big Wednesday Would You Rathers. The best one we get tomorrow wins a pair of tickets to the V-Festival. Need some inspiration. Have a look at some of the best ones we ever recieved to get your brains whirring. ...

Photos by Ignacio Genzon. Touring on the heels of their first kiss with Vice Records, the brother-from-an-Indian-mother King Khan led his keyboard, guitar, bass, brass, rhythm, and booty section through a dozen or so tracks off of their new compilation album, The Supreme Genius of King Khan and the Shrines , as well as a Spits cover and a rendition of Bowie's "The Jean Genie," in the uncomfortably crowded Echo last night. King Khan, a French-Canadian of Indian decent currently residing in Berlin with his growing family of rug rats, usually tours the U.S. with his Canadian counterpart and former Spaceshits band mate BBQ (alias Mark Sultan) as The King Khan and BBQ Show, which has deservedly garnered him a large fan base in North America. King Khan and the Shrines, though, have been playing mainly Europe, until the recent backing of Vice enabled Khan to ship his world-spread band on an American tour; so most of the material on the new record has been released before, but not heard live by KK & BBQ-loving rock n' rollers on this side of the globe. King Khan & The Shrines put up a gonzo-soul act in the tradition of James Brown, Otis Redding, and the Sun Ra Arkestra, and take it to a level that is either extreme emulation or poignant satire, depending on the tune. My favorite track on Supreme Genius , "Took My Lady To Dinner"--which clearly falls into the latter category, was left off the play list, unfortunately. The lyrics make me crack ...

SOME STORIES write themselves, and this is one of them. The Hydrangea Park Commemorative Planting Society in Ogano-machi, Saitama, planted 2,200 hydrangea bushes at the local Oshika Shinto Shrine a few years ago. Their objective was to create a “a village shrine in a grove” (chinju-no-mori), which is an ancient Japanese concept. Shinto deities are thought to [...] ...
