Sallie Saxon, the Charlotte woman accused of running a lucrative call-girl service, was arrested Monday on charges of Shoplifting $50 in goods from a store in Cotswold Village. Last week, employees at Stein Mart reported to police that Saxon stole a shirt, a pair of shorts and a wallet from the store at 2065 Sharon Amity Road, according to police. Authorities served warrants Monday charging Saxon, who also goes by Sallie Wamsley, with misdemeanor larceny. Saxon, 58, is expected in court Tuesday. According to prosecutors, Saxon made $3 million selling sex to some of the area’s civic and business elite. She charged clients up to $700 for an hour for her prostitutes and had lists of more than 500 clients who used her Internet-based escort service. In a deal with prosecutors, Saxon pleaded guilty in January to conspiring to entice women to cross state lines to engage in prostitution, and conspiring to commit money laundering. She and her husband also forfeited more than $650,000 in cash and property. She is awaiting sentencing and could spend between two and four years in prison. Since her Plea, she’s been cooperating with federal authorities investigating the case, spelling out for prosecutor’s how the prostitution business, who the regular customers were and how they may have helped the business flourish. ...

Environmental activist pleads guilty to arson Arrested for theft in Victoria in 2004 Sandra McCulloch Times Colonist Wednesday, June 04, 2008 An environmental activist arrested in Victoria in 2004 pleaded guilty yesterday to two counts of arson in Portland, Ore. Tre Arrow, who changed his name from Michael Scarpitti, was arrested here for Shoplifting a pair of bolt-cutters. He was extradited to the U.S. to face numerous charges -- including arson -- involving environmental protests. Arrow appeared in U.S. District Court in Portland yesterday to plead guilty to two counts of arson, said his lawyer Bruce Ellison. One count related to firebombing three cement trucks at Ross Island Sand & Gravel in Portland. The other related to damage of seven pieces of logging equipment near Mount Hood. Arrow will be sentenced Aug. 12, but that date may be moved up, said Ellison. "We have a stipulated sentence agreement of up to 78 months less time served since his detention in Canada on March 14, 2004 and he gets credit for good [behaviour] time, too." Arrow "has a comfort level" with the Plea bargain, said Ellison. On his website blog, Arrow said he "has weighed the options and decided that I don't want to take the risk of potentially being convicted and spending the rest of my life in prison." Arrow said the Plea bargain was struck without his giving any information about others involved in alleged illegal activity. "They offered me a deal I couldn't re ...

An article by Esteban Parra of The News Journal really caught our eye because of the title: MANY FIND SECOND CHANCE IN DELAWARE BOARD OF PARDONS. First thought, of course was, "What? Is there really any such place?" The article is based on 16 years of records recently released by the State under the Freedom of Information Act . It notes that one man is: ... one of about 2,300 convicts who have sought a pardon or commutation from the board since 1991, and one of about 1,800 to succeed with a clemency Plea before the five-member panel, made up of the Chancery Court Chancellor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state treasurer and state auditor. ... Most prisoners jailed for serious crimes such as murder, rape or robbery are denied by the Board of Pardons, the review shows ... Of 265 such requests to the Board, 56 -- or 21 percent -- were recommended for approval. Of those, 39 -- or 70 percent -- were granted by Carper, his predecessor, Mike Castle (now a Republican U.S. representative), or current Gov. Ruth Ann Minner. Those in prison for more common crimes such as passing bad checks, alcohol possession or Shoplifting were much more likely to be recommended for pardon or commutation. Ninety to 99 percent of such applications received a positive recommendation. The board considered 126 cases involving murder -- first- or second-degree murder, conspiracy, attempted murder or acting as an accomplice -- and recommended three pardons an ...
