Filed under: Dining Sugarcane is the latest night club to open on the Las Vegas Strip. Sugarcane opened on Friday at the Palazzo Resort-Hotel-Casino. The club is located adjacent to SushiSamba's Las Vegas restaurant and will feature samba dancers, geishas, distinctive cocktails and over-the-top interior design. The 4,000 square foot club includes a stage, dance floor and DJ booth made of bamboo, smoked and frosted acrylic, resin and paper. Gold and chocolate brown leather cover wenge wood banquettes and the club's theme is displayed through 4,000 custom-made simulated "sugarcanes" which drop down from the ceiling and contain moving lights that wind through the tubes and rods. Brazilian graffiti artist Felipe Yung ("Flip") has also taken the spray paint can to various elements of Sugarcanes décor. Continuing the Brazil meets Japan theme, entertainment will include exhibitions of capoeira, a Brazilian dance that incorporates martial arts, samba dancers, geishas, Japanese taiko drummers, models posing as Brazilian soccer players who will juggle soccer balls at the entrance and Sugarcane's in-house dancers. The cocktails also reflect the restaurant's Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian culinary roots with drinks such as the Parisian Geisha (vodka, sake, mint and lemongrass), the Figo (Montecristo spiced wine, fig liquor, pear juice and lime) and the Bushido or "Soul of Japan" (Shochu, plum sake, muddled plum and daikon beer float). Sugar ...

By Janine Kahn I wandered into Juban for the first time late one Wednesday night, famished after shooting a show at the Fillmore, and managed to rack up quite a bill between the tasty yakiniku ("grilled meat") and glasses of Shochu. The restaurant's now "in rotation" as my partner likes to say, and claims a place on the short list of eateries we frequent when we want something good fast. But cheapskates that we are, we only stop in between 5:30 and 6:30 on weeknights: the window in which Juban slashes its prices on select meat items, sake and beer in half. Details on the daily deals (and more photos) after the jump... ...

IN MAY 2007, I wrote this post about the export of Pyeongyang soju (Shochu) to the United States, wondering how well the product would go over due to considerations of both taste and politics. From Required Eating ©iStockphoto.com/ivanmateev T.S. Eliot began his landmark poem, The Waste Land , with the memorable line, “April is the cruelest month.” Eliot obviously never spent July or August in Washington, D.C. Considering the hair-melting heat to be found in the nation’s capital during summer’s peak, it’s not surprising that the city’s primary contribution to mixology is the long, cooling drink known as the Rickey . As Jason Wilson writes in today’s Washington Post , the combination of spirit (originally bourbon, but more commonly made with gin), lime juice, and soda water was named for Colonel Joe Rickey, a former Confederate soldier and longtime lobbyist. He is credited with first combining the ingredients sometime around the turn of the last century at Shoemaker’s Bar, a Capitol Hill watering hole. With the summer heat once again at hand, the D.C. Craft Bartenders Guild declared July as Rickey Month, and bartenders devised their own 21st century version of the venerable drink. Wilson took an extended crawl through participating establishments, experiencing rickeys ranging from a more-or-less classic version made with bourbon, ginger and honey, to more off-the-wall modern-day versions such as one made with herb-infused Shochu and yuzu juice. I have yet to try the version made with gin and a housemade black pepper & lime soda, but with the temperature in my own part of the country venturing into the hot and sticky realm, the ...
