ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman moved a bill to revoke amendments in the Press, Newspapers, News agencies and Books Registration Ordinance 2002 (PNNABRO) on the first day of the National Assembly session on Monday. Amendments in the PNNABRO were introduced by the previous regime that initiated a clampdown on the media, political forces and the civil society. The PNNABRO amendments targeted the print media, imposing unjustified restrictions on the press related to the publication of certain material. The minister said that revoking the amendments in PNNABRO was a part of the pledge made by the Prime Minister in his first speech where he promised to undo all curbs placed on the media by the decade long dictatorial rule. She said, At the same time, we expect the media to demonstrate an element of responsibility in their coverage of all issues and provide an impartial and fair analysis of the developments in the country". ... ISLAMABAD: Health sector is key to the governments agenda for social sector development, Minister for Health Ms. Sherry Rehman said Friday. Our government is strongly committed to facilitating an efficient, accessible and affordable health system to respond to the health care needs of the nation, the Minister said during a meeting with a visiting US delegation. The delegation from the US Chamber of Commerce led by Daniel W. Christman, the chambers Senior Vice President for International Affairs, called on the federal minister here. Talking about the issues and challenges concerning the health sector of Pakistan Ms Rehman said that low resource input, lack of policy framework and absence of linkages between various components of health delivery mechanism are key challenges restricting the growth and service delivery capacity of the countrys health sector. The current government has initiated the process of correcting the distortions in the health sector. We are working on creating and strengthening linkages between structures and components of the health sector. We are also revisiting our vertical programmes to identify weak areas and improve their efficiency and scope. ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman said that Asif Ali Zardaris nomination represented the beginning of the PPPs attempts to unite the federation at a time when the country was facing many challenges. In a democratic culture, it was normal to have other parties fielding their candidates and that the government was confident in its numbers needed to win the Presidential election, she said while talking to newsmen. In her comments about parting ways from coalition by the PML-N, she said it would cause more damage to Pakistan than to the Pakistan Peoples Party. PML-Ns decision to pull out from the coalition is a negative message for process of political reconciliation in Pakistan, said Sherry Rehman. She said our coalition was not based on two issues alone rather it was a coalition built by consistent efforts by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto whose visionary leadership saw political process as the only means to restore a democratic order in the country. ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Sherry Rehman Friday said the special committee has finalized the draft charge-sheet against President and presented the document to Minister for Law and Justice. Talking to journalists after a meeting of the special committee tasked to prepare a draft charge-sheet to impeach President Pervez Musharraf, she said the charge-sheet is a technical document and Law Minister will look into so that it could be presented to the coalition leadership. This document is expected to be sent to leadership of coalition partners by Sunday or Monday and then it would be presented in the Parliament, she added. Information Minister Sherry Rehman said the government was taking along all its coalition partners on the issue of impeachment and described this move as historical and fight for democracy. ISLAMABAD: The charge-sheet against President Pervez Musharraf is strong, voluminous and powerful indictment of his systematic misrule and usurpation of Parliaments powers, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman said on Sunday. Briefing the media after meeting of the joint committee for preparation of impeachment motion, the Minister said that now public sentiment against Pervez Musharraf is so strong that even his own party has begun to say he should not use Article 58 (2)b. No one wants to be counted on the wrong side of democracy in this historic battle, she said, adding that draft of the impeachment motion and charge-sheet will be completed within a couple of days. She said the meeting went very well and committee briefly discussed the points of charge-sheet, but those can not be disclosed before time. Talking to journalists outside the Parliament House here, she said PPP enjoys clear majority in the parliament and being a major party it has the right of Presidentship. In all provinces our party has adequate representation. We enjoy comfortable majority and our opponents are only spreading misinformation, she said while responding to a question. Stanley Fish caught up with the controversy surrounding Sherry Jones 's still-unpublished The Jewel of Medina , and wanted to remind NY Times readers that, whatever else you might say about Random House 's decision to avoid riling Muslim fanatics by publishing a novel about Muhammad's wife, they never actually censored Jones . "Random House is free to publish or decline to publish whatever it likes, and its decision to do either has nothing whatsoever to do with the Western tradition of free speech or any other high-sounding abstraction," Fish wrote—and, remember, this is a philosopher who will famously tell you that there's no such thing as free speech. Anybody who thinks this was censorship, he adds— like, say, Salman Rushdie —doesn't understand the precise philosophical and legal meaning of the term. This is exactly right. The difference between true censorship and Random House's decision to place a higher value on the safety of its proven corporate assets than on a commercially unproven work of artistic expression is, simply, the difference between "you can't do that" and "I don't want any part of that." Random House did not join forces with Islamic leaders to explicitly condemn the book, nor is it sitting on the manuscript to prevent readers from ever seeing it; they have given the rights back to Jones, who is even now working with her agent to secure another American publisher for the novel and its sequel. Neither Andy nor I was able to make it to Mark Weston 's book party last week, but luckily for us Wiley publicist Cynthia Shannon thought to ask the author of Prophets & Princes , a history of Saudi Arabia, what he thought about Random House pulling the plug on The Jewel of Medina , Sherry Jones 's novel about A'isha, the youngest of Muhammad's wives. "I agree with [ Denise Spellberg ]," Weston emailed Shannon after reading the original WSJ op-ed that started the public furor. "You don't turn scripture into soft core pornography." While admitting that he hadn't read any of Jones's novel, Weston says, apparently going by what the scholar who told Random House they were exposing themselves to terrorist attacks has said about the book, "it seems to be a work that will enflame rather than enlighten... Turning the Quran into a bodice-ripper is not the way to show Muslims the advantages of freedom." (Note: Based on a reading of the novel's prologue, I question Spellberg's characterization .) "Sherry Jones can write and self-publish whatever she wants," Weston added. "Random House is free to decide that a book is not worth the trouble if publishing it will cause people to die. Should the world's most violent men have a veto over what gets published? No. But publishing The Jewel of Medina would make radical Muslims stronger, not weaker.
