It's probably a bad habit, that stops me from completing the tasks at hand, but I'm just one of those people that find their interest sparked by throw away comments that have little to do with my original research. Most recently it happened when reading through a Forrester report, 'How CIOs can drive business change'. About halfway through, a line struck me. Actually, not a whole, just part of one (maybe I really am too easilty distracted):"As CIO tenure lengthens…"Common wisdom suggests that on average, CIOs can expect to be in position for somewhere between three and five years. But if it's true that tenures are lengthening, what are the reasons? It would be easy to assume that CIOs have simply become better performers: after all, the link between performance and longevity are pretty well established at the executive level. But I suspect that the truth is slightly more nuanced than that. I think what we're seeing is a maturing of the role, so that IT leaders have become more attuned to the demands the business will place on them, and simultaneously, the business is becoming more appreciative of the value the CIO can bring. I think that point is pretty well summed up in the title of the Forrester report: IT has become a leading change agent.
