Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are a funk/soul band. They are signed to Daptone Records, where the Dap-Kings are the house band. They are widely thought to be spearheads of a revivalist movement that aims to capture the essence of funk/soul music as it was at its height in the mid-1960s to mid-1970s. Part of the way this is achieved is to shun modern digital recording methods in favour of using traditional analogue recording equipment. The type of instruments used by the band may also be considered limited to those that would have been available up until the mid seventies. Submitted by 49st ...

(RFT freelancer Roy Kasten is attending the Austin City Limits Festival in Texas this weekend, and kindly offered to blog about it for us. Here's his first dispatch; all photos by Dana Plonka .) At past ACLs, I’ve had some of the finest musical moments early on in the day, before the waves of humanity and crushing sun. On Saturday I played it safe, and bet on Jesus. The gospel tent featured Shields of Faith , an established touring band from San Antonio, Texas, who testified like there really were a few sinners needing saving, instead of a small group checking over their schedules. I loved the Shields, easily the best singing of the day, at least until Robert Plant and Alison Krauss at the end of the night. (Alison Krauss) I drifted over to one of the main stages for a set by Mugison , an Icelandic singer and songwriter who wins comparison to Beck, one of the day’s headliners. Curse the blogger who started such a grassroots misunderstanding, as Mugison (aka Örn Elías Guðmundsson) is more like pre-batshit Ryan Adams, without the songs, unless you count “Jesus is a Good Name to Moan” as a song. I could only wonder what occult ACL politics landed the dude on a main stage, even this early in the day. I turned next to Fleet Foxes , with my skepticism set to unstunnable, and almost instantly found my inner critical asshole exorcised. Its Sub Pop debut isn’t nearly the freak-folk apotheosis some would claim, but on stage they’re funny, ...

For a while there, it felt more like New Orleans’ Jazzfest than ACL, at least while Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings were holding forth. A five-foot dynamo in four-inch heels, Jones hails from Atlanta (the home of a certain Mr. James Brown, don’tcha know), while the Dap-Kings are headquartered in Brooklyn. Geography notwithstanding, Jones and her ensemble share — and demonstrate considerable mastery of — old-school Stax/Volt soul, R&B and, especially, hip-shaking funk. Let’s face it, anyone who is going to style themselves “The Dap-Tone Super Soul Revue” had better be able to represent. Or, as Jones put it, “TES-tify and REC-tify.” After a JBs-style instrumental vamp and rave-up by the nattitly-attired Dap-Kings, Jones came shimmying out onstage, ushering in almost an hour of non-stop pyrotechnics onstage. Several times, Jones pulled audience members from the crowd or out of the wings to join her aerobics tutorial, but she really didn’t need the company. A soulful belter whose most obvious contemporaries are Bettye Levette and Irma Thomas, Jones sang convincingly of love and loss and the sorry, no-good so-and-sos responsible for both. Punctuated by stacatto horn lines and rolling-thunder bass notes, songs like “100 Days, 100 Nights,” “How Do I Let A Good Man Down” and the insanely catchy “Tell Me” (my favorite song of the summer) had the sun-drenched crowd moving and grooving. It’s timeless stuff that transcends tastes and fashions ...

Joey Guerra Sharon Jones does the Saturday shimmy. Sharon Jones brought so much soul-diva sizzle to the ACL stage, it made me want to slap somebody. No one around me, necessarily. I didn't need enemies. But the feeling was there, people. Jones' midday set was the most fully engaging I've seen so far. She's vampy and campy -- bits of Tina Turner, Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin in one dynamic package. The sharp-suited Dap Kings provided an extended intro before Jones appeared in a springy black, white and yellow dress. She was a fireball, stomping and jumping across the stage as the funk-soul rhythms flowed. Her soulful voice has a sharp edge, and the music was immediate and infectious. Everyone in sight was smiling. "I got to take these hells off, y'all," Jones said after a few songs. She removed her earrings, too, and coaxed a male fan onstage for a steamy serenade. Jones also sung (and danced) through her musical background, a bit that included nods to her West African/Native American roots and her church upbringing. All bios should be this magnetic. ...

Back in June, Weekly Davespeak had an opportunity to sit down with soul diva, Sharon Jones over lunch at Bonnaroo 2008 . Sharon has been on tour with her backing band, the Dap Kings, for most of 2008, beginning with Jam Cruise 6 in early July. She performed with Dave Matthews Band first at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, IL on 6/6/08 . Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings also open tonight, tomorrow and Sunday at the William Randolph Hearst Greek Theatre in Berkely, CA. These are the final three shows of the originally scheduled DMB summer tour. Our interview with Sharon focuses largely on the Soul music revival of recent years and her own experience in being a part of that movement. In the interview Sharon addresses challenges she faced as an artist and the bittersweet aspects of Amy Winehouse's fame achived using the Dap Tones Records band, the Dap Kings. A complete audio of this interview is available for download in our forums here . read more ...

I personally have a love for the early 60’s doo-wop, and when I first heard Sharon Jones, I thought for sure this was a lost album from The Supremes, Aretha Franklin or some other strong soul goddess of Motown. But no! This is indie artist Sharon Jones and her band, the Dap-Kings. [...] ...

The red ribbon goes to Brad Paisley, with honorable [...] ...

Hankering for a festival unlike anything else on the summer calendar? Then feast your eyes on the line-up for the inaugural Days Like This! Festival. Spread across four stages in the first weekend of 2009, Days Like This! will span hip hop, reggae, soul and electronica, with a roll-call of artists not likely to extend to the tastes of under-21s. Heading up the hip hop camp are trail-blazing veterans Public Enemy, flanked by the likes of Atmosphere featuring Brother Ali and Platinum Pied Pipers. It’s an embarrassment of riches for fans of soul, dub and reggae too. With a shared reputation for rousing live shows, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings headline alongside trip-hop originals Morcheeba. Indie-rockers The Dodos are also jetting in fresh from Falls Festival. On the DJ side of things, tastemaker extraordinaire Gilles Peterson will grace the decks with MC Earl Zinger on the mic, while Detroit legend Carl Craig leads the deep techno charge and Ninja Tune’s DJ Vadim buddies up with Yarah Bravo. Rounding out the stellar bill are Eli “Paperboy” Reed & The True Loves, Yo Majesty, South Rakkas Crew, Katalyst, Flying Lotus, Recloose, Ladi 6, Waajeed, Mark Pritchard & Steve Spacek, Watussi, Spikey Tee & Ritual and Budspells. Plus there’s plenty more still to be announced… Very pleasantly surprised? We are! Tickets go on sale 19 September through Moshtix. Days Like This! Festival Sunday 4 January 2009, 12-10pm Entertainment ...

"In Berlin, by the Wall, she was five feet ten inches tall. It was very nice. It was paradise..." begins Lou Reed 's 1973 rock opera Berlin . I loved that album to death when it came out -- it was about speed freaks, suicide, taking children away from an unfit mother and looking back at really bad love affairs... everything rock operas should be about. But it bombed at the time. Lou Reed's Berlin sees director Julian Schnabel documenting Reed's staging of the opus at St. Ann's Warehouse in 2006, with a top notch orchestra, children's choir and guest singers like Sharon Jones and Antony , who sings an unearthly beautiful version of Candy Says . Schnabel's artful photographic interjections really don't elevate this beyond just a concert film, but I still insist it's a great record. ...
