After six years of negotiations, on 29 July 2008 Mauritius and Seychelles signed an agreement delimiting the maritime boundary between the two island states. Although the exact coordinates of the boundary have not been released, reports indicate that the boundary will follow the median/equidistance line. Special adviser to the Seychelles' Ministry of National Development Raymond Chang-Tave announced that the median line boundary was constructed from base-points located on the Mauritius island of Aglega, and from base-points on the Seychelles islands of Coetivy, St Francois, Providence and Farquhar. The agreement still must be approved by the respective national assemblies before coming into force. However, Mr. Chang-Tave also told reporters that this boundary agreement paved the way for further negotiations on delimitation of their respective extended continental shelf claims.Source: 'Seychelles, Mauritius sign boundary agreement' Seychelles Nation via BBC Monitoring Africa, 12 August 2008. ...

Today, I read one of those papers, and it surprised me because it analyzes a phenomenon that is so obvious that I wonder why no one ever thought of studying it in a systematic and rigorous way before. I am referring to a paper that was just published by a team of researchers who found that particular behaviors can damage and even reverse the recovery of endangered species under certain circumstances. In this situation, the team documented the negative effects that can occur when individuals of a social species engage in frequent battles for limited reproductive opportunities.
